not a great episode, but I give it an "eh"t for the cast

An adventure in Canada that is watchable despite the fact that the person the Saint is helping, a physicist who defected to the West, is not played (or written) as particularly likable. Also, you'll groan at the plot contrivances and the conveniently stupid mistakes of the villains, and Canadians may shake their heads at how their home and native land is depicted as consisting mostly of fishing lodges and lumber camps. Enjoyable nevertheless for a very cute Carol Cleveland (later on Monty Python) as a spunky secretary and for a typically eccentric, scene-stealing performance by Darren Nesbitt as one of the baddies.

Wonderfully slimy villain

Warning: Spoilers
THE SPORTING CHANCE is a Canadian-set adventure for Templar in which he goes up against some very nasty Russians with a fine line in murder and kidnapping. The second half of this episode is greatly enlivende by the introduction of the ultra-slimy Derren Nesbitt playing another creepy villain, and very good at it he is too.

Darren Nesbitt's Episode
aramis-112-80488030 August 2022
I like Derrin Nesbitt, from his No. 2 in "The Prisoner" to his goofy SS man in "Where Eagles Dare" to his foppish hit man in "The Persuaders."

Here he comes in late but steals the show from everyone in the last act.

Also on hand is Monty Python's own Carol Cleveland, not in her only nor her best "Saint" role. But despite making a good showing it raises fears that without her Monty Python connection she'd have been just another pretty face. I'm glad she made it into "The Holy Grail."

The plot concerns a scientist who defected to the west; but he wants to be reunited with his family. What he doesn't know is that his family is safely in the west and his Soviet handlers are lying to him about that. Simon has to get to him with the truth before he redefects back east. Tense episode set in Canada by way of the studio, with Nesbitt the definite highlight.

Another Monty Python Connection
Misschipchase17 November 2022
There is a second Monty Python connection in this episode. Not only was Carol Cleveland (from Monty Python) in this episode but so was Bruce Boa. He was the American in Fawlty Towers who wanted a Waldorf salad. I did have to laugh when the Saint said to the secretary 'you look better without them' when she took her glasses off!! Blimey Simon, she might have actually needed them to read! Darren Nesbit terrific, as always. I always like watching him. Funnily enough, I met his distant family recently in South Africa & they knew he was an actor but weren't familiar with his work. I gave him a glowing review!!

The Sporting Chance
Prismark105 September 2022
A very routine episode that perks up when Derren Nesbitt turns up with a broad performance.

The Saint is in Canada fishing and sees a chance to land a big prize.

A German scientist Professor Mueller has invented a satellite guidance system.

Hoping to be joined by his family from Eastern Germany. Mueller is being forced to leave Canada and go behind the Iron Curtain.

He is told that his wife and daughter are in danger in the East. They will be harmed if he does not defect.

It is rather lacklustre and silly. Carol Cleveland is the eye candy as the secretary who helps Simon Templar and finds herself in danger.

At least the Saint got to do some fly fishing.

Not one of the best!

Pretty awful story that makes no sense but this entry is notable because it features a good dose of Carol Cleveland. She was the saucy beauty who worked with the Monty Python Troupe.
