THE SANDBAGGERS "A Feasible Solution" 1978

The SANDBAGGERS was a UK series set during the Cold War. The series follows a small unit of the SIS, which deals with various intelligence gathering problems. (Or eliminating said problems) The cast includes Roy Marsden, Ray Lonnen, David Glyder, Liz Bennett, Richard Vernon, Bob Sherman and Jerome Willis. The series ran for 20 episodes between 1978 and 1980.This is the sixth episode of the production run.

Roy Marsden is in charge of a covert action section of the UK Secret Service, the SIS.

A retired guided missile expert is grabbed up by some unknown gang while on vacation in Cyprus. The SIS is called in to have a look into the matter. Operations Chief, Marsden's first thought is that the grab was by the Soviets. But that does not make sense because the man, Donald Churchill, has been out of the game for years. Why would the Reds want out of date info?

Matters heat up though when Marsden hears from his CIA counterpart, Bob Sherman. It seems that the Soviets are hot to trot after one of their own missile experts disappeared from Syria. The UK expert and the Soviet man between them could design a far decent rocket. So who is it that grabbed up the two missile experts? Now Marsden hears that a Soviet agent has been bumped off in Cyprus.

Marsden sends out Sandbagger One, Ray Lonnen to have a look around Cyprus. It is soon decided that a Greek Cypriot faction is planning on building a missile. (Tensions were hot at that time between the Greek and Turkish factions on the island) Lonnen asks for another body from the UK and is sent a trainee from the spy school, Sarah Bullen.

Lonnen and Bullen are soon in a spot of bother when they are ambushed on a mountain road. The two manage to kill several of the attackers and capture another. The new girl, Bullen proves most accomplished with guns and questioning prisoners. Lennon thinks she is a tad too good, and contacts his boss about it.

Back in the UK, Marsden has asked his higher ups for a squad of SAS troopers to help Lonnen on Cyprus. The government though is reluctant to commit to any "unofficial" action on foreign territory. Marsden checks up on Lonnen's request to look into Miss Bullen. There is Surprise all around as it turns out that Bullen is really a KGB type. Marsden figures that the Reds are hot to trot to get back their own missing expert. Anyways, Lonnen and Bullen find where the two missing experts are stashed. They pull a midnight raid on the building killing half a dozen or so of the Group holding the men. Bullen takes her man, Lonnen takes his and the two agents go their separate ways.

This one is the weakest, story wise of the series so far. The rapid pace and action sequences do however cover up the plot missteps.
