Last third season episode for Redd Foxx
kevinolzak11 December 2016
"The Party Crasher" turned out to be the final third season episode for Redd Foxx, who decided to hold out for the next nine episodes (including the first three from season four), Whitman Mayo's Grady Wilson preventing the show's ratings from dipping. Rollo has a romantic evening set up for Lamont's place, but only if Fred accepts a free fishing cruise to Catalina: "while I'm out there on the boat chasin' yellowtail, what y'all gonna be chasin'?" Since Fred won't be a party to any party to which he's not invited he refuses to allow his house to be used: "why don't you just take these two tickets and go on that boat ride like a nice old man and watch the big dipper?" "man I ain't going' nowhere I'm stayin' right here, damn a dipper!" Despite Rollo's assertion that his apartment is too small they wind up there with Della (Della Thomas) and Angel (Angela Gibbs), who'd rather drink ripple than Rollo's Beaujolais, which Fred can't even pronounce: "first time you run into a guy with two chicks and a bottle of that beaujo...oh, get the hell outta here!" Of the many great bits, we hear Rollo engage in a serious discussion with Lamont about living with his father: "most cats cut out when they're 16, you got to cut out sometime - how old are you?" "31!" "what you waiting' on, Medicare?" The perfect capper has "The Party Crasher" ending with a hilariously audible crash!

Warning: Spoilers
I love this episode, Lamont and Rollo try to convince Fred to let them use the house for their party with the two wild women coming from Detroit to visit California, but Fred is having none of it. Lamont tried to convince Fred he doesn't want to come to the party because he will be out of place. These women like different types of things, Fred is old fashioned-he eats Onion Stew and dances older dances, while these women will like Lamont's French Wine and new dances, etc.

Fred refuses to leave, so they decide to have the party at Rollo's tiny apt anyhow.

Fred decides to crash Rollo and Lamont's party anyhow, showing up at Rollo's place unannounced with Stew and Ripple. The women are unhappy with the arrangement and want to leave. They don't like French wine and potato chips, they'd rather eat real food and have ripple. Fred shows up with his stew and the women are immediately interested in the very things Lamont insisted they would not like. Fred proceeds to take over the party and charm the women with his"old fashioned" dance styles.

This episode is hilarious, with Nat Taylor getting in a few great zingers of his own, and Della Thomas and Angela Gibbs guest starring as the two women from Michigan, this episode is great, funny, and was also the last one before Redd Foxx left the show temporarily for several episodes do to some disputes, and Whitman Mayo (Grady) took over the main role to keep the show going, until he returned.

I come back to re watch this episode often.
