SCARECROW AND MRS. KING Episode with Hildegarde NEFF
ZeddaZogenau22 March 2024
In the 23rd and final episode of the first season of "Agentin mit Herz" there was a real casting coup. A world star from Berlin did the honors. Hildegarde NEFF (1925-2002) played a Russian princess. In those years, German-speaking actors and actresses were often used as Russian characters on American television. This can be seen as an example in the outstanding mini-series PETER THE GREAT from 1986.

But one after anonther! Amanda King (Kate JACKSON, *1948), housewife and divorced mother of two sons, works incognito for an American secret service. Of course, she's not a professional like her smart colleague Lee Stetson (Bruce BOXLEITNER, *1950), but with her naive, placid nature, she repeatedly proves herself to be a natural espionage talent in Cold War Washington. By chance, in this episode she meets the Russian Princess Sophia Valosky, who wants to help a dissident Nobel Prize winner in literature (modeled on Alexander SOLSCHENYZIN) from the Soviet Union enter the USA. The Soviets have already flown a very young and well-trained killer couple (Clara PERRYMAN and Alex McARTHUR) to Washington. Luckily, Amanda and Lee aren't far away...

What great fun! Hilde, of course, appears under her international name "Hildegarde NEFF", which she was given by David O. SELZNICK and 20th CENTURY FOX in 1948 when she started in Hollywood. After her great start to her career in East and West German films (THE MURDERERS ARE AMONG US, FILM WITHOUT TITLE), she didn't really gain a foothold in Hollywood (THE SNOWS OF KILIMANJARO), but she did take New York's Broadway (SILK STOCKINGS) by storm . Back in Europe she also starred in the Roman CINECITTA (LA STRADA DEI GIGANTI / CATERINA DI RUSSIA) as Hildegarde Neff. In the 1980s she returned to Los Angeles for the sake of her daughter Christina, which then led to a charming guest appearance on "Agentin mit Herz". The episode aired on CBS on May 7, 1984 and on ZDF on September 15, 1986.

The young Alex McARTHUR (*1957) can be seen as the Soviet killer, who also had a supporting role in the hit series KNOTS LANDING the following year. As Ken Forest, he was seen for a few episodes as a rival to Valene Ewing's (Joan VAN ARK) brother Joshua Rush (Alec BALDWIN). However, Alex McARTHUR gained worldwide attention in 1986 when he appeared in the music video "Papa, Dont Preach" for Madonna's hit of the same name.
