This episode was inspired by a real-life incident involving Larry David and the show's editor, Janet Ashikaga. David had once offered to get her something from a restaurant he was going to and she requested a big salad. David bought her the big salad, but a writer's assistant had handed it to her, whom she in turn thanked, not David. Failing to acknowledge David's generosity, the assistant happily accepted the thank you.
Lauren Bowles, who plays a waitress at Monk's Cafe in 9 episodes of the series, is actually the younger half-sister of Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Lauren and Julia have the same mother.

Various details of Gendason's story are based on the O.J. Simpson case (which had happened a few months before this episode), including the fact that he's a former pro athlete. Kramer's line "You know who I am!" was said by AC Cowlings, the friend who drove O.J. Simpson in the infamous white Ford Bronco.
