I just got it!

I have probably seen this episode a dozen or so times over the years and I just realized the "pizza" argument was exactly the same as the "abortion argument." My goodness, this show still amazes all these years later. Such brilliant writing.

"What is his stand... on abortion?"
itamarscomix4 October 2011
Season 6, Episode 5, "The Couch"

A hilarious episode, though not one of the best season 6 has to offer. The main highlight is the return of Poppy (who first appeared in season 5's "The Pie") who helps Kramer with his vision for the "pizza place where you make your own pie", and provides some of the episode's funniest moments.

Elaine is also truly great in this episode, and it's probably the last time we've seen her take a stand and care about something (she was given a semi-activist personality in the early episodes with her anti-fur and feminist rants, but became more apathetic as the series progressed, in line with the rest of the cast).

So much going on I love it!

Warning: Spoilers
The Couch is probably the absolute best title ever used for one if their episodes as it absolutely centres around couch after couch including the famous and hilarious scene of George going to a stranger's house to watch 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' and the banter there is brilliant. It also has pizzas and Poppy what more can you ask for!

This series is much more than a sitcom and this episode proves it . It is a challenging satire about strong believes and human rights. Loved it.

Poppy Peed on the Couch
Hitchcoc6 December 2022
This episode is about Jerry getting a new couch and the implications of his doing that. It also bring back the guy who was cited for not washing his hand in the bathroom--Poppy. Jerry and Elaine go to his restaurant and are about to have a wonderful duck dish. But we find out that Elaine won't date people who are anti-abortion. This is something that causes huge problems. Elaine falls for the furniture delivery guy and they are getting hot and heavy. Until the abortion issue comes up. Finally Poppy comes to Jerry's after being hospitalized to collect money for the expensive dish that was never served. He sits on Jerry's pristine white couch. And then something happens. Great episode.

Couches
safenoe19 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I first saw The Couch when it debuted back in 1994, and wow, it's hard to believe that's 30 years ago, yes that's three decades ago. I'm now starting to re-watch some of the Seinfeld episodes, and it's amazing how prescient The Couch was, especially with the debate around the polarizing issue and how the courts have got involved and all, and it's amazing how the writers managed to get Poppie involved and all. David James Elliott, before he became a superstar in JAG, guest stars as a removalist who also causes dismay to Elaine for his views as well.

Anyway, The Couch has it's funny moments as well.

the pee stain was already there before sloppy did a slop P

Warning: Spoilers
Jerry is using Poppy as a scapegoat, perhaps.

This current review was typed up on May Day 31st in year 2023rd in century 21st of the G-Boy Calendar.

What happened in this episode?: Jerry gets a new sofa.

George joins a book club to impress a girl and meets a black family.

Kramer wants to make his own pizza pie

Elaine is a femmy.

The story and production overview: A good episode. Though each story wasn't a game changer. George meeting a black family was kind of "cringe" yet comical. If it was supposed to be, then they did a good job.

Bringing back Kramers pizza idea was cleaver then they ran it into the ground. What I would have done is have people make the own pizza and have someone burn their arms putting the pizza into an oven causing Poppies to close. This would be a call back when George said "you can't have people putting their arms into an oven".

Instead whta they gave use was a pointless scene.

Elaine was out of line but Poppy getting angry at Jerome and his Ex for giving him stuff he can't eat is out of order. They didn't know.

Highlight: Poppy "peeing" on the sofa.

Jerry, proud that he caused chaos at Poppy's

laugh meter: 7

Villain: Elaine, of course... She perhaps has the Margret Sanger Spirit in her.

Girlfriend attractiveness: George's girl, she's a looker 7.7.

Overall: A fine episode though nothing major happened

what can be learned?: Don't let strangers sit on your sofa.

Verdict: her body her choice... Bye bye!!

One of the unfunniest episodes you'll ever see
daleholmgren4 July 2018
What's funny about arguing about whether cucumbers should go on pizza? What's funny about people getting mad with each other over the abortion issue? What's the possibility that an adult man would pee through his clothes on to a sofa and not be aware of what he's done? What's the likelihood of a family letting a stranger into their house to watch anything on TV?

The magic of Seinfeld is in humor in situations you can identify with. This is about as funny as a pony showing up in Jerry's apartment and starting to poop. It's so outside the realm of reality, it is dull and boring. With all the writers, this is the best they could do? Just being outraged about something is not funny by itself. Anyone could do that.

George's Plot is a Bit Out There
Samuel-Shovel26 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Kramer's idea of having a restaurant where you make your own pizza finally looks to be coming into fruition. His business partner though unfortunately relives himself on Jerry's couch, forcing Jerry to get a new one. Elaine begins to date the couch moving guy. Meanwhile, George joins a book club but decides to watch the movie instead.

This one fails to hit the mark a bit. The whole gag about George showing up at the stranger's house to watch the movie is both unbelievable (even by Seinfeld standards) and painful to watch. The premise of the "movie versus book club" is funny but they took it in the wrong direction.

Jerry and Elaine's subplot of the revolving couches and Elaine's mover boyfriend is okay but just nothing spectacular by Seinfeld standards. Definitely a skippable episode.
