- When the quartet is invited to an engagement party, Carrie and Miranda feel like outcasts - singles without marriage prospects. Samantha picks up a TV agent, but soon switches her attentions to a physically attractive Franciscan, and offers her charitable PR services in a vain attempt to seduce him. When Charlotte asks Trey if they still have a marital future, he gets sexual but this time premature. - The girls attend the engagement party of a guy whom they had all dated at one point or another. They all end up getting the "don't worry, you will find someone look". Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) is infuriated when the groom cannot remember her name and refers to her as Charlotte.
Charlotte tries to deal with her separation from Trey. She wants to understand what direction her marriage is going in now. She has had sex with Trey once, and that is not sufficient to make a marriage. She goes to meet Trey (Kyle MacLachlan) at his apartment, and he tries to have sex with her, but only ends up ejaculating prematurely. Charlotte leaves saying that this is not working for her. She asks Trey to stop calling her and says that she will call Trey when she figures out what she wants.
Charlotte believes that every person has one soulmate, and she wonders if Trey is hers. While the girls believe that every person has multiple soulmates as that the whole notion of a single soulmate is a recipe for failure and disaster.
Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) is turning 35 within a week. Samantha suggests that Carrie should have a big birthday dinner to celebrate the milestone and also says that she should invite Big as they are now friends. Samantha makes a reservation at a restaurant to celebrates with her friends. Big (Chris Noth) is in London and she leaves a message on her machine in case he gets back in time.
Carrie is the first one at the restaurant for her own birthday party. Miranda and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) are in traffic. Samantha (Kim Cattrall) is stuck at work. Stanford goes to the wrong address. Carrie has to pay for her own cake and leaves. She gets yelled at by street working crew when Carrie walks over a freshly laid road section. Due to the yelling, Carrie is startled and drops the cake on the street and has to clean it up. Carrie thinks about men and the future when no one shows up for her birthday party.
She reaches home and Charlotte gets there to take Carrie to a coffee shop for a quieter celebration with the 4 girls. Miranda tells Carrie to get a cellphone as all the girls had left messages for Carrie about how they were stuck. Carrie is depressed that she is 35 years old and alone. Carrie gets back home to see Big waiting outside with champagne and balloons.
Miranda confronts her married friends about her single life. They always throw this "oh don't worry, he is out there somewhere" thing, and she retorts with "no, I don't think that there is someone for everyone".
Samantha finds a sexy priest doing charity work at the NYC center. Samantha attends church but finds that the monk is celibate. She goes back home to masturbate. Samantha tries to seduce the celibate monk. The monk refuses the pleasures of the flesh and says that he is devoted to his oath.
The girls make a pact that they are soulmates, and men are nice guys to have fun with.
