Bart's comment about not having seen Uter since the last field trip, along with a subsequent scene involving Uter's parents, are references to The PTA Disbands (1995). In it, Uter is seen falling behind while running to the school bus after a failed school trip, where he is attacked by Civil War reenactors.
Although the full frontal nude scene of Bart in The Simpsons Movie caused much controversy, this episode was the first instance of a Simpsons character's uncensored genitalia being shown. When Homer looks up the front page of the newspaper from the day he was born, the photo of him is clearly anatomically correct.
One of the reviewed restaurants is called "Patte LaBelle", based on the famous singer Patti LaBelle.
Homer claims that The Cable Guy (1996) had almost ruined Jim Carrey's career. However, this is not true. The joke was based on a persistent rumor that rival studios have spread, because they were angry that Carrey was paid $20 million (a record sum at the time) to star in the film. And while the film grossed much less than any of his previous films, it was far away from being a box office flop, and it didn't affect his career negatively.
Couch: The Simpsons sit down as normal. Marge notices the name "Matt Groening" written on the carpet, gets up, and wipes the name off. Groening comes in and rewrites his name on the floor.
