Quite Funny and Engaging!
g-bodyl29 October 2013
The seventh episode in the first season, "The Call of the Simpsons" is a much better episode than the previous one and does not lack in gags or jokes. I liked the adventures of Bart and Homer have with each other as they have some bonding time. I also liked the scenes involving Maggie and the grizzly bears. And finally, the guest voice appearance by Albert Brooks is great as he was very enjoyable as Cowboy Bob.

In this episode, because Homer is jealous of Ned Flander's new RV, he goes out to purchase one. Because of his bad credit rating, he can only get a broken-down one. As the Simpsons head out camping, they lose the RV over a cliff. As they try to survive in the wild, Homer is mistaken for Bigfoot and Maggie gets to live with bears.

Overall, this is a way happier and funnier episode. I loved the interplay between Maggie and the bears, but also Homer and Bart. Also, the scenes that has scientists arguing whether Homer is a human or beast is nothing but a laugh riot. This is a very good episode and is one of the best ones yet. I rate this episode 9/10.

Call Of The Simpsons

Overall, Call Of The Simpsons isn't exactly my favourite season 1 episode. But that's not to say it's a bad episode, in fact in some places it's a very good episode.

In terms of characters this is a bit hit-and-miss. Some of them seem a little bit off. Ned Flanders makes his second appearance in The Simpsons and is largely in his embryonic phase. The next two seasons would see him progress into the caring but annoying devout Christian of later seasons, but in his early phase he seems to be much more consumption based as the stereotypical neighbour that Homer envies rather than hates.

Maggie is given quite a bit of air-time in the episode, with her b-story of sorts about her and the bears that does slide slightly into sappiness though it does have it's moments.

Homer also seems to be slightly off character he seems much more responsible than in later seasons and even though much of what he thinks is wrong, there's a confidence to it that fades over the years.

So, in summary, not The Simpsons at their best. But, It's not a bad episode either.

Groundbreaking in parts but silly in others

Warning: Spoilers
The first season of The Simpsons isn't the best of the series but it is funny in places and helps set the tone of the series. The Call of the Simpsons is an early episode that is in a way groundbreaking- jokes about suicide, murder, envy and hopelessness establish a nice dark comedy. But the episode becomes a bit too silly.

The episode starts out grounded in reality, with Homer being jealous of his neighbour's RV and wanting his own, but it takes a crazier tone in having the Simpsons get lost in the forest, with Maggie joining a family of bears. And the episode becomes sillier still when Homer is mistaken for a sasquatch and scientists are unable to decide whether he is a human or an ape. What exactly was the point of all this? Another thing about this episode is the crude animation, but I don't give that too much importance. Altogether, entertaining and even funny, but this wouldn't make my top 100 favourite Simpsons episodes.

This is my first 10 of the series.

So refreshing after the last episode to actually get great And plentiful jokes.

This is the brand of Simpsons humour that will become so famous.

Under appreciated episode

Warning: Spoilers
More than just underrated. This early Simpson episode is seriously under appreciated and I'm not really sure why.

An early look at the Simpsons trying to do one of the typical American things in this case a camping vacation. Unfortunately Homer and Bart are not very good at it ( Marge and Lisa do better) Their budget won't allow them a luxury motor home but a beat up one that doesn't make it . But they try and don't lack for an interesting experience.

Bart and Homer get lost trying to get help and have one mishap after another. Marge and Lisa are confronted by the press and curious onlookers who think Homer is Bigfoot and Maggie is cared for by a family or of bears when she gets separated from the rest. She is no worse off and is actually missed by the bears when they run into Bart and Homer.

A little gem that should be a classic.

A Few Laughable Moments

Homer is talked into buying an RV to keep up with Flanders. The family ends up wilderness camping after the RV goes over a cliff. Homer, in his wanderings, gets mistaken for Bigfoot. The funniest bit is a series of newspaper headlines which attempt to describe Homer/Bigfoot.

Best Episode Ever
hollandprojects14 November 2009
Well, make that Second Best behind Homers Skateboard jump across the canyon. The Call of the Simpson is hilarious. I still laugh when I think about the rabbit trap scene. It's a classic early Homer trying to do the best he can to his family and naturally everything goes wrong, from wanting to live it up in a Winnebago to impressing his family and trying to showing his son how to survive in the wilderness, which fails miserably. The Bigfoot was a classic idea with subsequent headlines and a character voice that is only in a few episodes. It is one of the few classic episode with Homer asking for his favorite food; Pork Chops and Apple Sauce. The radio dial keeping the family from teetering off the cliff, to the family leaving Homer stranded as he teeters on the edge of a cliff, to Marge arranging the animals in the woods. Maggie taming the bears with her pacifier. Really, what is not to like about this episode.

The Call of the Simpsons
This episode is not shown on TV, in my experience nearly as much as the other episodes thus far in the series (and even they aren't shown that much as channels don't seem to show season one Simpsons on TV all that often either). And so my full memory of this episode is not quite as good as other episodes but this is a solid episode nonetheless based on what I remember, which is a good deal. I like the idea that Homer in this earliest of seasons was always trying to make his family better despite all their flaws. Whereas the famed "Jerkass Homer" in the future of the Simpsons where Homer is just a bit of a Jerk...

The Simpsons have entered the forest

Homer suffers a bit of the green eyed monster over Ned Flanders' new RV.

This is one of my favourite episodes of the first season.

It is the first episode for me where the humour is prolific and both verbal punchlines and sight gags fly at you thick and fast. There are so many great lines and funny situations it is hard to pick favourites. This is all dependent on your sense of humour of course, but it very much hits the mark with me.

The plot nicely satirises the material aspirations of people with a psychological need to 'keep up with Joneses'. Plus it shows how the economy targets gullible consumers with predatory salespeople and the use of credit.

All the banter from Cowboy Bob is fantastic, there is a great use of 'The Happy Wanderer' song, and the outdoor adventures of the Simpsons are superb.

Development

I agree with a previous reviewer - this episode does see the show start to expand its range of humour, and how far it can push these topics. But that's the same of any show in its first year.

Yes, this first year of the show isn't the best, but it's a darn sight better than its current form, with each episode having at least one iconic line/scene.

I enjoyed this episode.

Warning: Spoilers
The Call of the Simpsons pretty much signals to the world that The Simpsons ain't The Flintstone or Wait Till Your Father Gets Home. It's an episode that shows that an animated sitcom can have heart and humor at the same time, and make you feel for The Simpsons family and the story.

Anyway, I can't believe it's take me ages and ages and a day to post an imdb user review of The Call of the Simpsons, so it's about time I do so with the start of the new year. Anyway, The Call of the Simpsons is quite funny with Homer being mistaken for big foot or the yeti or something mythical. Homer is starting to sound less like Walter Matthau.
