Totally Odd Egg

Warning: Spoilers
I don't recall the Sixth Sense and wasn't overly impressed with Night Gallery back then, watch it mainly out of nostalgia, check out an episode here and there on MeTV every now and then.

Such was the case with this episode about a comatose young woman sensing the plane she is on will crash, along with the others on the plane.

The episode, apparently (and all too obviously) chopped down to a half hour program from an hour program, if I understood correctly, is really not a standout for its story or structure.

The fascination is undeniably the cast; Barbara Babcock (now edited, she has no dialogue).

Jess Walton would go on to win an Emmy on Young and the Restless, likewise Colby Chester would appear on Y&R with her.

Ed Harris would go on to appear on Capitol, also with Jess Walton before she ventured to Y&R.

Marge Redmond of The Flying Nun as well as Sarah Tucker in the Cool Whip commercials.

And Sharon Gless of course went on to win her awards for Cagney and Lacey.

Even odder bit of trivia, Gless and Harris would 'reunite' in the '78 film, Crash, as survivors of the flight 401, which crashed in the Florida everglades in '72, when this program came out! Unfortunately, the episode isn't interesting in its horribly edited state. It's more fun watching for names and faces (since Babcock, again, didn't even speak!)

What's with the title change?

You can ignore my attempt at humor for the summary line, as this was a terrific episode, but I find it a bit odd that "they" changed the title from "Flying Sepulchre of Death". Anyway, what's in a name? This isn't the usual formula for this fine show, as the entire segment takes place on an airplane, which was done fairly well for 1972, as it revolves around a woman named Lilly(Jess Walton)who's having visions of the plane going down, and one of her visions has all the passengers in their own coffin, and there's a hazy tint around this creepy vision, especially since Gary Collins(Dr. Rhodes)recently died, and he's one of those in a coffin. There's many familiar faces including Marge Redmond, a very young Sharon Gless, Barbara Babcock(Salem's Lot), and a very fine performance by Ed Nelson, who plays the main pilot, and even though he doesn't believe in Dr. Rhodes' psychic abilities, he eventually needs his help to land the plane, and to help the very sick Lilly, whose moans get a little tiring after a while. I'll tell you that they safely land the plane, but I won't tell you why or how her and Dr. Rhodes' visions figured everything out.
