At the beginning of the episode, young Lex is seen at the Excelsior Academy. "Excelsior" is a noted phrase (and possibly a nod) to comic legend Stan Lee (from Marvel Comics).

One of the rare times the Luthor home in Metropolis is shown, albeit only the interior. The mansion in Smallville was said to be just keepsake that Lionel purchased and never visited before forcing Lex into exile there.

The box which Lex received on his 12th birthday was supposedly forged from the armour of Saint George, who is considered to be one of the venerated saints of Christianity. Here Saint George's famous legend of slaying the dragon is narrated by Lionel to Lex.

In the opening scene, the name of the episode can be seen on the sign for the Excelsior Academy. It reads "Memorial Pii Aeterna" which roughly translates to "The Memory of the Pious is Eternal."
