- Emily goes into labour while in the cabin shortly after Matt finds her with Nancy. Colin gets ready to fight in the duel, writing a farewell letter to Emily. Colin and Rob debate options for dealing with Morell, but it's Jessie who provides the final solution. With Chris Haywood as Morell,
- Jessie ("Josephine Byrnes") tries to talk Colin ("Brett Climo") out of accepting Morell's challenge, but he refuses. She draws a shotgun on Morell ("Chris Haywood") and forces him to swear to abide by the rules of a fair fight. He agrees and says he will meet Colin in combat at 11 O'clock that morning.
A young state trooper ("Dieter Brummer") encounters some of Morell's men on the road at their blockade. The men tell him there is an outbreak of Typhoid in Paterson's Ridge, and warn him to stay away. The trooper says he is looking for a girl called Nancy Duggan. It seems that Nancy ("Lisa Callaghan") killed the man who ran the institution she had been detained in, when he made advances towards her. When she tells her story to a shocked Emily, she adds that she knows she will burn in hell for what she has done. At that moment Matt discovers the shack in the woods and walks in unsuspectingly, only to be confronted by Nancy, who is once again wielding a shotgun. She makes Emily bind Matt's hands, and holds him captive too.
Rob tries to reason with Colin, but the elder McGregor son insists that it is his duty to protect his little brother and the rest of the family from harm. As the same time as Colin is writing his wife a farewell letter, believing that Morell will kill him in the duel, Emily suddenly goes into labour.
Nancy, relenting, releases Matt so that he can help Emily, but not before making him promise that he will not hand her over to the authorities later on.
Rob doesn't trust the Morells to leave the town alone once the duel is over, fearing that they will run amok, regardless of the outcome. He tries to round up support amongst the menfolk of the town to take on the gang before the duel can take place, but no-one will help.
The lone trooper, finds Emily's wrecked buggy and begins searching for its owner. He arrives at Nancy's cabin, and when she sees him, it's clear they know each other. She disarms him and brings him into the cabin where Nancy reveals that she and the trooper, Nathan, had been friends since childhood, and had only encountered a problem in their relationship when he had joined the police force. She helps Matt take care of Emily, who finally gives birth to a healthy baby girl.
Rob tries talking Colin out of taking on Morell again, insisting that he should be the one to meet the challenge instead, so Colin resorts to tricking his younger sibling and then knocking him unconscious to keep him out of harm's way.
Nathan takes Nancy for a walk and tells her that contrary to what she had believed, she wasn't wanted for murder, as the man she had hit on the head hadn't died. He adds that he has not come looking for her to arrest her in any case, because he loves her.
Colin meets Morell in combat and Morell out-draws him, shooting the minister in the leg. As a surviving combatant, Colin has the right to return fire, but Morell pulls a concealed gun first, in an act of foul play. However, Jessie had anticipated treachery on the part of the bandit, and shoots Morell herself, wounding him, but leaving him alive.
Nancy and Nathan announce to Matt that they are getting married, and that Nathan will conceal Nancy's identity to protect her from the authorities. The couple then drive Emily, Matt and the baby back to town, where she is united with her father and the rest of her new family, and given the name Kathleen.
