Frank & Betty's Second Honeymoon
ShadeGrenade6 March 2009
Warning: Spoilers
A well-remembered episode of the first season of 'Some Mothers Do Ave Em'.

Frank and Betty are on their second honeymoon ( what must have the first have been like? ). After narrowly catching the train, Frank takes his poor spouse to a drab looking guest house, run by Mr.Bedford ( Neil McCarthy ) who seems about as friendly as a wet weekend in Saundersfoot, South Wales. The only other guest is nervous ( and slightly camp ) Kenny ( Cyril Shaps ).

Finding two single beds in their room, Frank pushes them together - and tears a big hole in the lino. To conceal this, he takes a rug from under a wardrobe, tearing it cleanly in half. The wardrobe is now lopsided, so Frank needs something to go under it. Betty looks on in horror as her husband gradually demolishes the room. Finding his wardrobe gone and his clothes laid out on the bed, Kenny thinks the hotel is haunted...

Hilarious from start to finish, this episode has two very good guest performances from Neil McCarthy and Cyril Shaps. McCarthy's 'Bedford' is Basil Fawltyesque at times ( he has a moustache too! ), especially when he tells Kenny: "we don't have funny furniture here...only funny people!". As 'Kenny', Shaps is a scream, whining Bedford's name every time something strange happens. He put me in mind of the sheep from the old Hanna Barbara cartoon 'Its The Wolf!'.

Crawford and Dotrice are great too ( why does Betty never walk out on this guy? I know that love is supposed to be blind, but...). Each time Frank damages something, he says: "I'll throw that out in the morning!". It ends with the pair doing a moonlight flit ( luckily, Frank did not leave behind a home address ) through a hole in the floor of their room.

Funniest moment - Kenny espying his wardrobe on the move!

Mr Bedford!!!!

Frank and Betty set off on their second honeymoon, it doesn't get off to the best of starts when Frank almost misses the train, but it gets better when they arrive at the hotel, until Frank decides to rearrange the room.

Oh my goodness, this is an agonisingly funny, scream out loud thirty minutes of pure frustration and comedy gold. If ever you're having a bad day, this is genuinely the pick me up tonic that you need, it's truly one classic scene after another.

It's the first time that things aren't all truly Frank's fault, that hotel really was in a terrible state.

The supporting characters are a joy, Mr Bedford is not unlike Basil Fawlty, his frustrations are a scream, and as for poor Kenny, talk about comedy gold.

'There are no funny wardrobes in this hotel.....just funny people.' It is just loaded with joyous one liners.

What's most impressive, is that Crawford did all of his own stunts, he was just phenomenally talented, and pretty daring.

10/10.

Going on Holiday
Prismark1025 October 2022
Some mothers certainly do ave em. Frank and Betty go on their their second honeymoon. The first honeymoon was a disaster, they ended up in seperate destinations.

This time Frank nearly misses the train as he had to go to the little boy's room. Only to chase after the train and hang on to the back of it.

At least they were on the same train, just not together.

When they arrive to their guest house, Frank and Betty end up with two single beds. When trying to push the beds together, he rips a hole in the linoleum.

By trying to cover up the hole, Frank causes more mayhem. Leaving the guest house owner and a fellow guest puzzled.

Man child Frank Spencer brilliantly played by Michael Crawford was a cleverly realised character. Totally inept who would drive any sane person round the twist.

You just sit back and watch the chaos unfurl. I am still shocked to see Crawford performing his own stunts. I just do not know how the BBC allowed it as he hangs on to the moving train.

The Very Best Episode of Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em.
Hotwok20133 August 2017
The IMDb user rating gives this episode "Going On Holiday" an 8.6, the highest rating of any episode of Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em. The user rating has got it spot on although I would happily give it an even higher score. This particular episode is hilarious from start to finish. Frank & Betty Spencer are taking a "second honeymoon" holiday & stop a at a seedy-looking guest house run by a Mr. Bedford (Neil McCarthy). We are informed that their first honeymoon was a complete disaster when the newly weds ended up in different places, Betty in Torquay & Frank in Shrewsbury. The second time around doesn't get much better except that they did just manage to both stay together on this occasion. As soon as they get into their room Frank decides he wants to move the two single beds together to make a double bed & in so doing he rips a piece of the lino. To cover up the rip he decides he needs to use a carpet which involves rearranging the rest of the furniture creating more mayhem. Across the hall in the room opposite is a man named Kenny (Cyril Shaps) & Frank decides to pinch his carpet by sliding it from under his door. Kenny watches in horror & thinks something supernatural is taking place. "Mister Bedford!" he cries in his high-pitched, homosexual-sounding voice. After this Frank damages his wardrobe & decides he has to replace that, too, with Kenny's whilst he is out of his room. When Kenny discovers his wardrobe is missing he cries out for Mr. Bedford again. Mr Bedford arrives back on the scene & Kenny tells himabout the "funny" things that are happening to the furniture. "We don't have funny furniture in this hotel", he informs him. "Only funny people!". Neil McCarthy plays Mr. Bedford really well somewhat in the manner of Basil Fawlty. Eventually after moving all the furniture around Frank ends up breaking the damp floorboards creating a hole down into the bar on the ground floor. "This place ought to be condemned!", cries Frank. By now with all the strange noises he keeps hearing Mr. Bedford decides to keep guard in the hall by sitting down outside their rooms. Frank decides that he & Betty will have to climb down through the hole to make an escape from their second honeymoon disaster. He uses his bedsheets to make some "rope" & ties it to his wash-hand basin. When he & Betty climb down through the hole in the floor he also brings the sink crashing down into the bar as well. Time to get out of the place as quickly as possible!. Altogether this is a really wonderful piece of comedy.
