This is the only episode of the series not to feature any scenes set in St. Eligius.
This features the fewest regular cast members of any episode at only three: William Daniels (Dr. Mark Craig), Bonnie Bartlett (Ellen Craig) and Cindy Pickett (Dr. Carol Novino). Ed Flanders (Dr. Donald Westphall) had left the regular cast by this time.
This episode takes place and was filmed in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Peterborough was the model for the fictional New Hampshire town of Grover's Corners, the setting of the 1938 play "Our Town" by Thornton Wilder on which this episode is based. Dr. Westphall's opening monologue is similar to the opening of the play.
At one point, Donald Westphall mentions that Calvin Coolidge once made a speech on the steps of the Peterborough town hall. Ed Flanders, who plays Westphall, played Coolidge in Backstairs at the White House.
The title is a a homage to 'Our Town' by American playwright Thornton Wilder that has been the basis for many revivals, movie and TV productions. The play originally opened on Broadway in New York City, New York, USA on 4 February 1938 at Henry Miller's Theatre, and had 338 performances. The popular Pulitzer Prize play also had 3 revivals on Broadway.
