While visiting Philadelphia, Dr. Craig William Daniels says while he was in school there, he was "obnoxious and disliked", and sings "It's hot as hell in Philadelphia!". These are two lines from the musical 1776 (1972) which Daniels starred in as John Adams.
After Chandler says that Dr. O'Brien has gone to a hospital in New York, Morrison replies, "She won't last thirteen weeks in New York." This is a reference to the CBS medical drama Kay O'Brien (1986), set at Manhattan General Hospital, which was intended as a rival to St. Elsewhere (1982). Kay O'Brien (1986) premiered with Kayo on Call (1986) on September 25, 1986, the day after this episode was broadcast. Morrison's prediction that O'Brien would not last thirteen weeks proved accurate as the series was cancelled after only eight episodes.
The title is from the expression: "Where there's life, there's hope." It has been changed to include the names of the "Road" comedy duo Bob Hope and Bing Crosby.
Guest stars Dakin Matthews and Edward Hermann also appeared on the tv series Gilmore Girls.
