When did bank robbery become distinguished?
kfo94941 August 2016
In this Christmas episode, a man has fallen on hard luck when his insurance will not pay for his damaged farm. So he sets out on robbing a bank and burying the money. He is now wanted by the law. Webb Crawford is that man and he has been running from the authorities for sometime. When he gets news that he only has a short time to live, he wants to be with his family for one last Christmas. He sets off to return to the house that is located about five miles from the midway station on the Stagecoach route.

As Webb is walking home, Simon picks him up not knowing the situation. When they get to the midway station, Webb pulls a gun and wants Simon to go to his house and gets his wife and kids. Webb knows that people will be waiting on him to arrest him, or even worse, kill him. The bank's insurance has agreed to give $500 to Webb if he returns the money. The $500 dollars will be the money needed to get his wife and kids back east so they can be looked after. This is Webb's last Christmas wish. But there are others that want to ruin his plans and they will be waiting only the road for a chance to get Webb before the law.

If you are a sucker for Christmas shows then this episode will please. I was not overly thrilled with the story-line about robbing a bank and then somehow make it look glorious, but it is a theme that goes with many western tales. Dick York did a nice job as the main character but for such a sick person he looked spry during the production. The director missed the mark on this cue since a more sickly looking person would have captured the audience's heart to the fullest. There was many things in this episode that seemed weak for such a positive and festive holiday season show. I could not help but feel like I was watching a local community center play inside of a Four-Star Production.

Three Wise Men

A schmaltzy festive episode of Stagecoach West.

Dick York is Webb Crawford. All he wants to do is obtain some presents, go home and spend time with his wife and kids at Christmas. Only he has no money so he steals the presents as well as gun from a store.

As he walks towards his home, Simon Kane gives him a free stagecoach ride. Simon suspects that this stranger held up the store.

At the relay station, Webb Crawford makes his demands. He is an escaped prisoner after robbing a bank. There are three bounty hunters after him, he just wants to spend Christmas with his family and he will give himself up. Webb is dying from a blood disease and this would be his last Christmas.

The only reason the audience is meant to sympathise with Webb is because there was a wildfire that destroyed his ranch. The insurer would not pay out as it was an act of god. Webb was left destitute.

York is rather charming as the desperate man with a gun. He also looks rather healthy for a dying man.
