Terry Farrell was supposed to appear as Jadzia Dax but was busy filming Move Along Home (1993), so Alexander Siddig was asked to appear instead as Dr. Julian Bashir.
The Replimat scene with La Forge and Worf's food is a reuse of the same joke used in Time Squared (1989): La Forge hates the food, while Worf loves it.
When the story eventually became a two-parter, it was decided to add a subplot to bump up the running time. The staff thought about Data having a religious experience but it seemed too similar to Picard's in Tapestry (1993), so it instead became about Data dreaming.
