- When an approaching alien ship wipes their memory, the crew struggles to put back together what happened.
- The Enterprise is heading for the Epsilon solar system. A suddenly approaching alien ship uses scanners so strong that all crew members including Data lose most of their personal memories, even names and ranks, yet retain their operational and language skills. The external communications are down and computer data banks have been selectively wiped. Some, including the ship's manifest, are altered, so as to make a Commander MacDuff Executive Officer (rather than Riker) and the Enterprise is on a crucial mission in a war the Federation had been conducting for years against the Lysian race. The alien ship has been destroyed, they assume by the Enterprise, although there's no battle damage. While crew members behave differently, failing their normal reference patterns, MacDuff volunteers for a memory therapy Dr. Crusher suggests, so he can pretend for it to fail and press on the attack on the Lysian headquarters, but the war logic doesn't quite add up.—KGF Vissers
- Captain Picard and the crew of the Enterprise suddenly realize that their memory has been wiped and they have no idea who they are. For some reason, they have retained their ability to run the ship but they have no idea who among them is in command or what each of their individual roles might be. Worf takes command initially but when La Forge finally manages to access the ship's roster, a command structure takes shape. According to the roster however, the first officer is Commander MacDuff with Riker as second officer. They are also at war and while MacDuff argues they should destroy the enemy as per orders, Picard begins to doubt they would have a sworn enemy whose technology comes nowhere near matching that of the Enterprise.—garykmcd
- The Enterprise is heading for the Epsilon solar system. Riker is having trouble working with Ro, as Ro changes the ship's operating procedures without first getting approval from Riker. A suddenly approaching alien ship uses scanners so strong that all crew members including Data lose most of their personal memories, even names and ranks, yet retain their operational and language skills. Each member of the crew tries to determine their role on the ship based on the location they were at, when they regained their consciousness. The alien ship has been destroyed, they assume by the Enterprise, although there's no battle damage.
The external communications are down, and computer data banks have been selectively wiped. There is no interface to the ship's computer either. Worf and Picard have a tiff about who is the leader of the vessel, since Worf is also dressed properly, and with military honors. They figure that their ship has phasers and photon torpedoes and a shield. So, it must be a battleship. Ensign Ro (Michelle Forbes) works with Geordi and Riker to bring the ship's systems back online. Worf wants to make the ship ready for combat as top priority, while Picard says they should first figure out who they are and what is their purpose. Geordi goes to Engineering to figure out if he can reconnect the ships systems to the computers and to the bridge. Slowly, he is able to get Communications, Navigations and Weapons back online. He is also able to access the ship's manifest. Till then, Worf has assumed the captain role on the ship.
Beverly works on a way to bypass the brain's normal neural pathways and figure out a way to access their own memories. Data was in ten forward at the time of the incident and now thinks he is a bartender. Some, including the ship's manifest, are altered. It establishes Picard as the Commanding officer, Commander MacDuff (Erich Anderson) Executive Officer rather than Riker, who is the 2nd officer. The Enterprise is on a crucial mission in a war the Federation had been conducting for years against the Lysian race. The ship's logs say that Lysians have a new weapon through which they have captured 14 Federation ships recently and held their crews captive on their planet. The new weapon shoots an energy beam that wipes off computer banks and impacts the memory and functioning of the crew, like what happened to the Enterprise
The orders of the Enterprise say that they are to cross over into Lysian territory and destroy their central command star base. Deanna wants confirmation of this order from Starfleet HQ. But orders prohibit any subspace communications. While crew members behave differently (Riker and Ro hook up), Enterprise crosses into Lysian territory on Picard's orders. They are confronted by a Lysian destroyer, who is far inferior to the Enterprise in weapons capability and with a Disruptor capacity of only 2.1 mega joules. MacDuff wants to destroy it, but Picard wants to open a communications channel. In the ensuing delay, the Lysians open fire on Enterprise, forcing Picard to return fire, thereby destroying it.
Geordi and Data try to find the medical records of the crew and see that they all have been specifically destroyed. MacDuff volunteers for a memory therapy Dr. Crusher suggests to retrieve the long term memories of the crew. MacDuff's plan is to pretend for it to fail and press on the attack on the Lysian headquarters, but the war logic doesn't quite add up. Picard is having great trouble in carrying out his orders without having any moral justification for it. MacDuff meets Worf in his cabin. He wants Worf's support when he challenges Picard for the command of the ship.
Ship enters Lysian system and their perimeter defense systems kick in, but they are no match for the Enterprise, which continues towards the command star base. The Command star base is completely defenseless and had 15,311 souls on board. Picard refuses to fire on a defenseless entity. MacDuff tries to take command and shoot but is beaten back by phasers from Worf and Riker. Turns out Macduff is an alien, whose planet has been at war with the Lysians for eons. Beverly restores everyone's memory.
