The first Trek episode to show a transporter process from the transported's point of view.
Barclay asks Geordi if anything strange has ever happened to him while using the transporter, to which he answers, "Not really." However, in The Next Phase (1992), Geordi and Ensign Ro were "lost" in a transporter malfunction where their molecules were shifted out of phase, rendering them invisible and able to move through solid structures. As a result, the Enterprise crew thought them dead.
This episode marks the first appearance of the Admiral's uniform which would be used for the rest of the series and much of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993).
Dan Curry, covered in a green suit, puppeteered the transporter creatures.
O'Brien's collar insignia changes from lieutenant (two pips) to chief (one black pip) in this episode. According to the Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion, this was done to reinforce the plot point that lieutenant Barclay outranks O'Brien.
