- Everyone aboard the Enterprise is is mourning after a shuttle craft piloted by Lt. Commander Data exploded as it was approaching the ship. In fact, Data has been kidnapped by Kivas Fajo who, apart from being a trader, has an enviable collection of unique items. Data does not take kindly to his captor's requests to sit and pose for him but Fajo finds a way to bend him to his will. Back on the Enterprise, Geordi is particularly distraught at the loss of his friend. When they realize that their meeting with Fajo may have been the result of a manufactured crisis, they track him down.—garykmcd
- A presumed routine transport of material from a Federation-friendly planet to the Enterprise goes suddenly wrong as the shuttle craft explodes. Enterprise was procuring 108 Kgs of Hytritium, to decontaminate the water supply at Federation colony on Beta Agni II, from Zibalian trader Kivas Fajo. The water supply at Beta Agni was contaminated very suddenly, without any gradual build-up. Hytritium is too unstable for transporters and hence Data was shuttling the material between the trader ship and the Enterprise. But before Data leaves with the last shipment, Kivas De-activates Data with an energy surge and sends an empty shuttle towards the Enterprise, which explodes mid-way.
Kivas shares his ship's sensor information of the explosion with Enterprise. Enterprise leaves as there is nothing else to do. The Enterprise has 81 kilos of Hytritium, which is barely enough to complete their mission at Beta Agni II.
Android Data is presumed killed in the accident but actually finds himself kept captive on a star ship Jovis, by Kivas Fajo (Saul Rubinek) and his assistant Varria (Jane Daly), who have an impressive collection of contraband treasures (including a 1962 Roger Martis baseball trading card). Kivas says that he has kidnapped Data for his own amusement. Data refuses to be a valued capture and attempts to escape. He can't attack Kivas as he is covered with a protective force field, and all the doors on the ship are DNA encoded. Kivas assigns a chair for Data to sit in his room of exotic treasures.
Varria tells Data that Kivas is lavish when obeyed and equally brutal when not. Data makes Varria realize she is a slave, just like him. Varria says that the Enterprise is not looking for Data since Kivas added traces of Data's component elements to the shuttle, just in the right proportions to fool the sensors into believing that Data was in the shuttle. Data will not change into the clothes Kavis gave him, so Kavis throws acid on Data, which does not impact his skin, but dissolves all his uniforms entirely.
Worf is chosen to replace Data on the bridge at his station. This is the 2nd time Worf has been promoted after the death of a friend. The first time was when Tasha Yar died. Meanwhile Data won't cooperate when Kivas brings his friend Toff (Nehemiah Persoff) around to show him off. Kivas wants Data to behave normally, but Data stands completely still as a mannequin. Kivas returns later with a Varon T Disruptor, which is a torturous phaser, banned by the Federation, and threatens to use it on Varria if Data does not comply. Data complies.
On board Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge and Wesley champion the thesis that its doesn't fit with Data's android nature after careful examination of all recordings... They find that Data did not follow standard procedure in his last flight from the Jovis. He did not report the departure of the shuttle from Jovis, like he did in the first 2 trips. On Beta Agni II, the away team finds that somebody planted the Tricyanate poison in the water supply deliberately. Tricyanate can only be treated with Hytritium and it seems that Kavis Fajo was around with just the right amount of Hytritium to solve the problem.
Picard realizes that Kivas is a collector of rare and valuable objects and rushes back to intercept the Jovis. They get reports on Jovis's last reported positions and head there Meanwhile Varria helps Data escape in Jovis's shuttle but wants Data to take her with him. She helps Data get to the shuttle bay, but Kavis intercepts them and uses the Varon T Disruptor on her, killing her. He blames it on Data. Data overcomes his programming to fire on Kivas, but just in the nick of time Enterprise beams him back. Kivas is arrested. His stolen treasures are returned to their rightful owners.
