Garth falls hard for Lethe, but she's a teenager and way to young for him. Be careful CTV. Dr. Tabor, meanwhile, is attractive and on his side, but he doesn't even know she exists. Hello, writers!

Where Every Prospect Pleases

Still searching for the elusive back-up bridge of the Ark, Devon (Keir Dullea), Garth (Robin Ward) & Rachel (Gay Rowan) instead find themselves inside 'New Eden: Leisure Village' - formerly a vacation spot for Ark crew. It has been commandeered by scientist Dr.Asgard (Simon Oakland) who uses it as a test ground to prove his theories on the preservation instinct of human nature.

Whilst Asgard and colleague Dr.Tabor (Iréna Mayeska) observe from a control room a subtle agent provocateur named Lethe (Trudy Young) allows herself to be discovered by them, pretends to be a victim of some unseen menace and attempts to play Devon and his friends against each other arming each of them with a small, concealable laser.

The biblical allegories were an integral part of the series and this episode boldly suggests Satan (in the guise of Lethe) providing temptation in Eden. Devon is again presented as a Christ-like figure attempting to bring harmony to what remains of humanity and putting his life on the line in the process.

Background performers and walk-ons are never given proper appreciation until one sees what productions look like without enough of them. This happens to have been an episode of this series which illustrates what it can be like when there are not enough actors and the sparse amount of humanity suggests a reality other than the intended diagesis.

The Ark was said to house a considerable amount of people but we would see maybe twenty an episode and even less in other episodes counting the leads. Pockets of between ten and twenty people do not adequately communicate the humanity which is supposed to be residing within the dozens of domed communities of the Ark. It was evident that they scrimped on everything in this series including background performers.

As a note on the guest-stars many of them were hired believing the show to be a considerably more impressive spectacle than they found themselves appearing in. Some were lured in via a relationship with 20th Century Fox which was one of the production companies.

American character actor Simon Oakland had the opportunity to do science fiction and play an intellectual - things which he had seldom been given the opportunity to do in his career. But at some point in this production he must have wondered how he had talked himself in to lounging around in a silver lame track-suit on an undersized sound-stage that looks an indoor parking garage in Scarborough.
