The guys stay pretty busy in this episode; not one scene in the police station. Trying to track down an arsonist/thief who shot a cop in his most recent heist, Starsky and Hutch go back and forth between the guy's girlfriend, his hotel room, and the bail bondsman that has money posted for his bail. The guy seems to be pulling more jobs and always just eluding them as they track him from place to place. Until his body is found, and he's two days dead. Now the new question becomes - who have they been chasing for two days?
This is a pretty nice episode with a lot of investigating and running around following leads. Starsky keeps injecting random information into the conversations from a book he's reading, which seems like something he might do. I like to watch when they have various interactions with people, trying to get information and sort out the situation. We do know more of what's going on than Starsky and Hutch do, but it's fun to watch them gather the information and figure it out. This is a good, strong episode.
My favorite scene is really short, but it caught my eye right away. Starsky and Hutch are standing on either side of Capt. Dobey when he informs them that the corpse just found is the guy they have supposedly been chasing. They both turn their heads to look at him, simultaneously, in surprise. PMG and DS are both in the frame together and they both have to look at the same time with the same response to Dobey's revelation. And they do. I don't know, but something about the way they reacted so perfectly and in unison makes that seem so real. It seems like it would be something difficult to get right, but it's perfect. (There may be a chance that I'm paying too much attention to this show when I start noticing details like that.)
Another detail (that I may or may not have right) I noticed is that at first they talked about how their culprit "shot a cop". We did see that the cop was taken to the hospital and our last information is that he's in surgery. Later, Hutch will say they are looking for this guy because he "killed a cop". I don't remember hearing the outcome of the cop's status anywhere along the rest of the show. I think that might have been a little script error. Or I just missed it. Someday I'll watch it again and pay more attention.
Thus ends Season 1. There were some really quality episodes in this introductory season, and Starsky and Hutch had become very popular back in the day. There are still some good things ahead, but I think Season 1 was probably the best, most consistent work that was done.
