A female country singer is being harassed by a man who says she owes him. When he demands money and she doesn't pay, he begins killing random people and telling her that she is to blame. Feeling guilty and desperate to make him stop, she agrees to his demands. Starsky and Hutch begin this case trying to identify and locate the singer's stalker, and then end up saving her from him.
This episode is fine, but there is not a lot of complexity to the story. I think Lynn Anderson does a commendable job as the singer who feels a little guilty about her success and therefore allows the stalker to manipulate her. I think this was her first attempt at acting and she came off pretty well.
PMG and DS do their jobs as Starsky and Hutch. The best scene is at the end where they save the singer as the stalker is trying to make a get-away in Starsky's car. Without speaking, Starsky and Hutch know what they are going to do and move themselves into positions where they can jump the guy at the last second before he gets away. I always like scenes where PMG and DS get to play our very smart team.
We have another emotionally disturbed killer on our hands in this episode, but at least the dialog, delivered by Starsky at the end of the chase, puts the responsibility on him and not his victim or his troubles.
What I don't like about this episode is the way Starsky acts so silly during the opening sequence and again in the tag. Hutch has to distance himself because Starsky is embarrassing him; I would have as well. And I wish they would have let DS perform the song at the end in a better way instead of making Hutch act so nervously. I guess these are examples of how at times these scenes have to give us overblown depictions to make sure we get the point. The 70s were not subtle.
