- As Hannah struggles to answer the math problem on the board, she gets pulled out of class to answer a phone call in the office from Grace, who has impersonated Hannah's mother. Grace is sending Hannah a taxi so they can both skip school together to capture the 'perfect day.' The two girls' first stop is the diner, where they consume an abundance of sugar as Grace runs Hannah through their plan for the day -- to get Sonny & Cher's autograph when they make a scheduled stop at the local radio station. When they arrive at the radio station, they find out they've missed the duo from a hysterical fan. Hannah and Grace end up fighting when Grace feels that her perfect day is ruined. After the two take some time to cool off, Grace comes back with a peace offering and an explanation on the origins of her 'perfect day' and why it's so important to her -- her father once let her skip school so they could spend the day together watching the planes take off at the airport. Since her father died two months later, Grace has made it a yearly tradition to take the day off in his honor. After the two make up, they walk around town with no particular destination in mind, they end up hearing Martin Luther King, Jr. speak. Grace is able to snag his autograph as he makes his way through the crowd.
Meanwhile, Hannah's parents are struggling to run their factory on bare-bones staff as a nasty flu has rendered them all ill. Evelyn seems to be the only one not inflicted as she sends Shirley home and tries to encourage David to rest. He insists that he needs to keep working to finish an important project for a client -- a furniture piece for the bank. When the skirt doesn't match the rest of the fabric and their usual driver out sick, the task to retrieve more fabric falls on Uncle Heschie. As they anxiously await Heschie's arrival, Evie finds herself growing ill as well. Once Heschie arrives with the fabric, the men get to work on fixing the piece as Evelyn rests. Once the piece is finally complete, Evie is once again feeling better and heads down to see how everything turned out. As everyone is relieved that they finished it in time, Heschie hands Evelyn the soup he went out and got for her. The soup, being extremely hot and the lid improperly secured tumbles onto the newly-finished sofa.
Elsewhere, Ida is on a date with the butcher at the diner. A fact which she has kept hidden from the rest of the family. It's her first date since her husband died fifteen years ago. Heschie catches her getting ready for her date when he stops by the house for keys to the safe, he figures it out and lets it slip to Evelyn later. After Ida's date has left, Hannah and Grace show up running into Ida where she scolds them for skipping school before revealing she was on a date. The girls end up striking a deal with Grandma Ida; she won't tell that they skipped school if they don't tell anyone about her date. In her voice over, adult Hannah reveals that it was nice sharing a secret with her grandmother.
