Harold is desperate for a bit of sun, and some posh crumpet, the problem is be wants to go alone, Albert has other plans.

It's a joy to watch, for my shame, this is the first time I have ever seen this episode, it's quality, a great end to the first series. The frequent remarks about Bognor, and in particular the final television episode now make perfect sense.

I love the way that Albert sulks, his whimpering about Mrs Clifford and woe is me attitude is both hilarious and tragic. If you perhaps have an elderly relative, you may recognise some of those characteristics. The old man really does lay it on thick and fast, poor Harold.

Over sixty years on, and it's still funny, it's still brilliant, why on Earth is nobody capable of making anything funny nowadays. It may just be the best of Series one.

A joy to watch, 8/10.

The Holiday

Albert and Harold always go to Bognor Regis for their holidays. The same hotel, the same food and the same things to do.

Harold fancies a change. Something more exotic and appropriate for a single man approaching middle age. He wants to ditch his father and go abroad.

Saint Tropez where he could bump into Bridget Bardot. If not her then many other single women. He just needs to break the bad news to his dad.

Well Albert does not take it well despite Harold would pay for his holiday elsewhere. Maybe a coach holiday to North Wales. Feeling lonely and unloved.

Albert has his funny turn and the doctor has to be called for. Maybe Albert does need a break.

Poor Harold there was no getting away from his dad.

This became a familiar sitcom trope for multigenerational sitcoms. It was the kind of story Steptoe and Son would revisit later on.
