***SPOILERS*** During a tour of the now closed Federal prison Alcatraz discovered plastered into a cell wall the body or skeletal remains of former inmate Lou Kovic. The rub here is that Kovic was supposed to have escaped from the prison island back in 1955 some 20 years ago and is now said to be living alive and well in South America. With Det. Let. Mike Stone, Karl Malden, and his partner Inspector Steve Keller, Michael Douglas, on the case they soon discover that the body or skeleton found was indeed Lou Kovic so who's been impersonating him all these years sending letters from south of the border to his now grown son deputy D.A Lou Kovic Jr, Peter Strauss. That's what Stone and Keller are out to find out and solve the Kovic escape, that now turned out to be murder, once in for all!

Kovic in fact took the rap for mob boss Nick Lugo, Paul Stewart, in a murder some 20 years ago but was about to double cross him by telling the police that it was in fact Lugo not him who committed the murder to get out of a life sentence. It was that what caused him to end up dead and plastered into the cold gray wall of the Alcatraz prison. Kovic Jr. in trying to find out who was responsible for his father's murder ended up having another person killed by Lugo's goons a Homer Willcox,Jim Boles, who was mistaken for the person who really murdered his dad former Alcatraz prison guard and now down in the dumps alcoholic Herb Stebbins, Lou Krugman.

***SPOILERS*** It soon becomes evident that there was a third party involved in Lou Kovic's murder who was totally overlooked by both the police and young Lou Kovic Jr. This person a high priced shyster, lawyer, was working for Lugo's mob who had Kovic iced before he was to spill the beans on Lugo in the murder that he took the rap for. And now with young Lou Kovic about to uncover his identity he's ready to have him knocked off before he goes to the police. The fact is that Kovic Jr is very close to this shyster and killing or having him killed would be like killing his own son. But with his life depending on snuffing young Kovic out he doesn't have a choice! Or does he!
