Campy in a 70's way! Trail of the Serpent is cheesy! There is a cheesy gang with Serpent logo and a police officer down. We get a trap for Stone, with what is left with the gang trying to regroup after a foiled collection take down. Exciting 70's police chase, shooting etc. During a search Stone gets taken hostage. Keller must find his partner. Cheesy but watchable. Well Keller and the shift captain shake down, and deduct the case. A 70's template script of the story slowly un winding a story layer by layer. With a social message of criminals having a choice. Well we see pen and paper low tech police work, with phone surveillance. Well a formulated sappy ending. Well acted and directed, but cheesy. 6 stars.

Yet another very weak script from this uncharacteristic "Quinn Martin Production".

A police officer is shot and killed by gangsters. And a police lieutenant (Mike Stone, actor Karl Malden) is taken hostage by those same gang members. But the police department "can't spare the manpower" to look for the culprits?
Get serious! In real life, a 10 block area of the city would have been locked down, an intense manhunt by dozens of police officers and marshals would be underway.
Entertaining story, but it's hard to take this show seriously.
