This is my favourite episode of this series, which probably isn't saying much, as I only really ever found a couple at best to be good and most of them near intolerably poor, the production value really kills it for me. That being said, there's definitely something special in the sheer amount of atmosphere that this tale commands. It's clearly also fairly cheaply produced, but despite the limitations Tom Savini makes great use of unusual camera angles and thick shadows, not to mention several of the excellent musical themes from the horror anthology classic Creepshow, to craft this one into an effective little chiller that generates a disturbing tone of unknown dread that just keeps on going until the final revelation, which is pretty fantastic. It's brilliantly suspenseful up to that point. Very cool and bizarre little monster even if they show a bit too much of it for me. I found the character of the girl to be a little thin as all she seemed to do was complain to the professor about the mystery noises, and he just kept dismissing her and so on.. And she must've been a complete idiot, I mean just take a look at Professor Fennor's creepy decor! It bugged me how the mysterious professor's motivations were never quite clear. Just why exactly was he letting out his horrible mutant daughter's room, was he insane? Was it all some kind of sick game to see how long before curiosity killed the cat? Even though it's only a cast of two and there's only a few locations, it keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time and I enjoy this tale mainly because that, apart from the monster's surprise appearance at the end, it's more of a psychological kind of fear. What I find unnerving about it is the little things, like the classic scares of someone lying terrified in bed hearing something scuttling around in the dark that they can't see, and the pale little hand almost grabbing the vulnerable foot, and the shot where the camera pans down to show the red eyes of the horror lurking just inches under the bed right below her head on the pillow, that is like what nightmares are made of! And the creature effects are for the time, still impressive, with the thing looking like an albino cross between a ghoulie and a gremlin. And when it's finally revealed it sure delivers a good shock, especially if you're watching for the first time. That poor girl!!! Well presented, well executed, and a good and insanely creepy episode, Tom Savini sure could knock one out!
