Jim narrates, "it began late one afternoon in the Wells Fargo office in Rondo." Jim ties his horse and walks into the office where the agent greets him,"Morning." Jim answers,"Morning."
Jim Hardie is referred to as a "gunslinger", meaning a person who had gained a reputation of being dangerous with a gun and had participated in gunfights and shootouts. But "gunslinger" was not a term used until 1920 (in the Western film "Drag Harlan"). "Gunman" was the common term used for those individuals in the 19th century.
