Jim Hardie's visit to his horse ranch is interrupted when Wells Fargo sends him to an area to investigate a rash of train robberies. While on a train to the area Jim makes friends with a man who offers to share his sandwiches with him. The train stops at a remote location and Jim finds himself midst a train robbery. The robbers strip the passengers of their money leaving Jim and his friend Homer Pittman broke. When they arrive at the next town, the two men have to share the one remaining hotel room plus Jim has to give up his gun and gun belt as security for the cost of the room. Homer gives Jim a watch he stole from the leader of the train robbers. When Jim tries to hock it, it leads him to the gang he is searching for.
