With friends like that who needs enemies.

Emma Adkins is down on her luck, behind on her rent and close to being kicked out, she blackmails her landlord, he's behind with installing a fire escape. Emma writes to an old School friend of hers Nell, Nell telephones her and invites her for the weekend, it becomes a long term arrangement. Emma moves in upstairs, a self contained flat above the house, at a knocked down price. Nell soon begins to realise that she's made a terrible mistake by allowing Emma to stay, taking food, drink etc. After six weeks of torture Nell reaches breaking point, giving Emma notice. When that fails Nell is left with only one option.

It's a rather good episode, owing a lot to the acting master class, the the wonderful Joan Greenwood, such a legendary actress, truly a screen icon, that voice simply unmistakable, adding to her utter uniqueness as an actress. Rachel Kempson too, a fantastic actress in her own right, what a fantastic combination they make. You really see the journey from friendship to hate.

Clever episode, Emma makes you so annoyed, you cannot help but be infuriated with her, it's particularly well played out, the twist comes as a great surprise too, you get the sense that Nell was truly pushed to her breaking point too.

Such a nasty, twisted episode, I think it's a cracker, 8/10

"It's only fair, you must help!"

Warning: Spoilers
If the Season Three opener "The Flypaper" was the most horrific 'Tales of the Unexpected' episode, then this one is so far the most infuriating. Taking advantage of a life long friend the way Emma Adkins (Joan Greenwood) did makes you want to reach right into the screen and grab her by her throat. The story starts out with Emma accepting a weekend invitation stay at Nell Bridges' (Rachel Kempson) country home, and gradually turning it into a long term affair, as the destitute woman persistently intrudes on Nell's good graces and her modest means. However she has a very ingratiating way about her, and manages to find some loyal support from an attorney who she babysits for. She brandishes his knowledge of the country's renter laws to intimidate Nell from evicting her, and takes it a step further when she's injured coming down the stairs from her upper flat. Considering all that went before, the story's maddening conclusion results in Emma's designs on taking Nell's cottage and life savings away from her. For this viewer, it wasn't all that unexpected. I think the series could have earned it's name this time if Nell, realizing that she faced a futile future, used Emma's hospital pillow to put an end to her misery.

Is it a tribute or a coincidence?

It is strange that no one seems to have noticed that this story is a kind of remake of WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABT JANE, Bob Aldrich's masterpiece, starring Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. Same scheme and topic; especially with Emma's character actress whose voice and way of speaking is exactly the same as Bette Davis.

Another average episode.

Warning: Spoilers
Tales of the Unexpected: Bosom Friends starts as penniless old lady Emma Adkins (Joan Greenwood) receives a phone call on her birthday from her old school friend Nell Bridges (Rachel Kempson) who lives in a farmhouse which she can't afford, Nell suggests that Emma rent the upstairs rooms & that would ease her money troubles. Emma senses she could also ease hers even though she hasn't got any & agrees only she can't pay any rent because she doesn't have any money & takes advantage of Nell's good nature, however Nell becomes fed up with Emma & decides to take somewhat unfriendly action...

This Tales of the Unexpected story was episode 14 from season 4 & originally aired here in the UK during June 1981, the fifth of twelve Tales of the Unexpected episodes to be directed by Grahma Evans this is average stuff at best. The story by Dana Lyon was dramatised by Robin Chapman & is a pretty predictable affair, it's all about trust, taking advantage & other such morals although that doesn't really make for a good story in itself. I suppose it tells it's story effectively enough & there's a decent ending but it's nothing special, the character's & dialogue are OK & at 30 odd minutes in length it takes a while to get to it's very simple & basic punchline.

This looks alright, the low TV budget didn't help & it's a bit flat & bland looking. There's no scares or suspense or tension in this one. Again there's another fine British TV cast here.

Bosom Friends is yet another instantly forgettable Tales of the Unexpected episode that is worth watching if your bored or there's nothing else on.
