The genius of Andy Kaufman
gina-reino24 February 2024
It is nearly forty-three years after the initial airing of this episode and I feel it is one of the funniest. I was in junior high school when this show was on the air. I can remember the show and that it was funny but had no appreciation for the actors.

While Andy Kaufman's portrayal of Latka is funny, seeing Andy Kaufman literally transform into two different characters right before your eyes lets us see his comedic genius in action. It is sad to me that he didn't live past.thirty four years. I wish we could have seen more but I am grateful for the ability to rewatch these classic TV shows and gain a new appreciation for not only Andy Kaufman but the rest of the cast as well.

Best episode of the series!!!!

I have a warm spot in my heart for this episode. During the series, there were great episodes that rank as 9's. But to me, this one is the only 10 rated episode. You have to have an open mind watching this one. It's all fantasy as Latka's personality is changed overnight to an arrogant snobby playboy, whom everyone begins to hate. Alex (Judd Hirsch) delivers a powerful line to Latka that sums up everyone's anger towards him. And it is the ending that was just done oh so well. Great writing! You can see Latka crying out for help in this horrible personality he's trapped in. It ends in very heartwarming fashion. I love "Latka, The Playboy"

Our introduction to Latka's Vic Farrari character.
TxMike7 September 2008
Warning: Spoilers
The episode begins with Louie have an exterminator spray in his cage to kill the world's largest cockroach that terrorizes Louie and steals his lunch. The guest actor was a young George Wendt as the exterminator, many years before he became famous on "Cheers."

The main story begins at Mario's and Latka lamenting that he doesn't have what it takes to attract pretty American women, and proves it by being rejected by pretty Robin Klein as Karen. So he tells his friends he will take an 8 day vacation, study Playboy and a tape of an FM radio Deejay, and "alter his lifestyle to fit the fast lane." He repeats that phrase to them a number of times, each time sounding a little less like "Latka."

Latka does accomplish his transformation, and as he meets up with his buddies at Mario's, after 8 days of practicing, his dress, mannerisms, and voice are all different. And, Karen is there, and becomes a girl that Latka picks up. But in the process no one likes Latka anymore, they want the old Latka to come back and Vic Farrari to disappear.

SPOILERS: The episode ends in Alex's apartment, Latka has come to him for help. Alex tells him to relax, and try to recall what the old Latka sounded like. Finally Latka puts his head back for a few seconds and when he looks at us again he has that silly Latka grin, and talks like him. As he and Alex are celebrating, he gives the camera a sly grin as if to say "Vic Farari is still here, he will be back." And we now know he does come back.
