Having been a fan of the "Taxi" TV series for years, I am now re-watching all episodes on DVD.
This episode starts with a new driver and as Louie tells him the 3 things he expects, the 3rd one is the word he never wants to hear, ever -- "accident."
Louie doubles over in pain and the others convince him that he should see a doctor. He does, and is admitted to a hospital for exploratory surgery. Saying he has never been in a hospital before, one of the cabbies visiting reminds him that he was born in a hospital. Louie glares at him and says "I was delivered by a midwife, on a kitchen table." After a pause, he clarifies, "Make that half of a kitchen table, my father was eating dinner on the other half."
Anyway, as his visitors are leaving he asks Alex to stay behind. Louie admits he is scared and has remorse for his bad behavior for most of his life. Asking God for forgiveness, he makes a pact, if he survives the surgery he promises that he would be "the best person I can be." He wanted Alex as a witness.
It turns out only to be a very large gallstone (Tony - 'Good thing they only took out one, he can still have kids.') and Louie gets back to work quickly, and surprises everyone with how nice he is to everyone. But Bobbie has made a bet, that Louie can't be nice for one whole day. When Bobbie gives in and starts to pay off to Alex, Louie becomes very angry at the ruse of Bobbie's, baiting Louie with a false "accident" report to get him angry, and proceeds to hang Bobbie from an engine hoist. |He then promised that the 2nd most miserable cabbie would be the one who either lets Bobbie down, or feeds him.
Back in the bar Louie is crying in his beer because he failed badly in his promise to God. But Alex reminds him, "You promised to be the best that you can be. Maybe this is the best you can be." Just as vermin and snakes have a place on Earth, so does Louie De Palma. He accepts that and goes away happy with his lot in life. As he leaves and walks past a table, he gathers the tip in his hands and walks away with it, with a grin on his face. Alex is left with a look on his face, "What have I done??"
