This episode shows the start of the Robin/Starfire relationship. Robin and Starfire ultimately fell in love in the comic books series and had a lasting relationship. Just as this episode illustrates, Starfire absorbed Robin's language through a kiss in the now-classic scene from "The New Teen Titans" (vol. 1) #2.
At the beginning when Robin is fighting the burglar, he is startled and asks him "Aren't you supposed to be with-?" To which Robin responds not anymore that he works alone now. He is referring to Robin working along side The Batman (2004). In the comics, prior to joining the New Teen Titans, Robin had a falling out with Batman and went solo. At this time, Robin dropped out of college at Hudson University in a city called New Carthage.
This episode is a flashback to before the events of the very first episode, Divide and Conquer (2003). Here, it is revealed how the Teen Titans met for the first time.
Beast Boy is wearing his mask with his Doom Patrol costume, as seen in Homecoming: Part 1 (2005) and Homecoming: Part 2 (2005); The events of this story take place right after Beast Boy leaves the Doom Patrol.
In one scene when Cyborg and Beast Boy first talked to each other, Cyborg said "You're a weird little dude, you know that" which Beast Boy responded with "you called me dude",That is how Beast Boy got his famous catchphrase. The Changeling (Beast Boy) and Cyborg became fast friends in the comic book series - something that is echoed in this episode. Raven and Cyborg also have a little bonding moment; They shared a similar scene in "The New Teen Titans" (vol. 1) #7.
