An extremely funny episode.

Warning: Spoilers
After being threatened with a possible raise in rent, the roommates reluctantly go to work in Mr. Ropers' garden. After some slapstick mishaps (including one of those classic "step on the rake and get whacked with the handle" gags), some plants are removed and end up being used for a floral arrangement that Helen has put together. Then Larry frightens Jack & Chrissy into thinking that this plant is actually cannabis, and she phones Helen in a panic, trying to warn her.

The witty and hilarious dialogue just flows constantly back and forth in this particularly good script by show-runners Don Nicholl, Michael Ross, and Bernard West. The Ropers, of course, are always sniping at each other, with Norman Fell getting to do yet another of his "turn to the camera and grin like crazy" routines. The bits in the way overgrown garden are priceless; this viewer found it particularly delicious the way that the insects pestering the roommates apparently *love* the insect repellent the kids brought along. But the best bit involves the panicked Jack & Chrissy visit a police station to ask for some advice; they're nervous enough as it is, but of course she has to point out to the desk sergeant (David Tress, "Missing in Action") that Jack has been drinking some of Stanley's homemade beer. One hysterical bit of business has a distraught Helen whacking Stanley (after he thinks he's saved the day by ruining her arrangement) just as a photographer snaps a picture.

This viewers' favorite quote from the episode, by far:

Jack (referring to the garden being more than a "little" overgrown): "Chrissy, there are pockets of Japanese in there who don't know that the war is over."

Eight out of 10.

ode to Suzanne Somers
This episode has a commentary track on the DVD. Apparently it is singled out as a classic. In my opinion they are all classics. Something that struck me was the lyrically way this authority went on about almost everybody, I agree with all of those bar one. He did however rather backhandedly say that Suzanne Somers was finding her character. And that was all. In my opinion, well of course there is the legendary John Ritter, and Norman Fell is the cat's whiskers too... but Suzanne Somers... Oh man, oh man... Imagine these episodes without Chrissy Snow.

I have made no secret of the fact that I cannot stand a certain main cast member of this show. I think she is vastly overrated. I think she brought very little to the show. Yet it is poor Suzanne Somers who's always at the short end of the stick. Just because she played the ditzy blonde. And as for "ditzy": everything Chrissy says is nicely on-the-nail in a different way. Dumb, never. Chrissy is sweet. I daresay I think she reflected a part of Miss Somers.

I don't like the way Suzanne was treated. Overlooked and ridiculed. I love Chrissy Snow.

Warning: Spoilers
....Janet asking Roper about the redeeming qualities of the yard after Roper mentions it.

Well it seems the buildings backyard is a little overgrown. In fact, it's a lot overgrown. If the trio cleans up the yard, they will avoid an increase in the rent that they can ill afford. (I believe It is the one and only time we see the backyard in the series).

Some excellent comedy watching the trio try to clean up Roper's overgrown yard. The rake gag never gets old. (The Simpsons used that gag over-and-over again with Sideshow Bob and was always funny).

The yard is where the whole misunderstanding regarding the cannabis plant ending up in Mrs. Roper's flower arrangement begins. (A can of bis?).

A very funny moment is where Jack has a mouthful of Mr. Roper's homemade beer only to find out it was strained through Helen's stockings. Jack's reaction is priceless.

I don't want to spoil too much.

I strongly recommend watching this episode.
