- Jack (John Ritter) serves dinner to the food critic of the local paper. However, the critic only takes a few bites of the meal and then leaves. Jack thinks the critic doesn't like the food and goes home and complains about it to Janet (Joyce DeWitt). They think that the critic will write a bad review in the paper. Larry comes by and is told about the critic leaving early. He suggests that Jack write a scathing letter to the critic, admonishing him for not eating the meal and calling him a terrible critic. Jack agrees and gets Janet to write the letter on her typewriter, so he could mail it the next day.
The next morning, Terri (Priscilla Barnes) comes home with groceries and calls for Jack. He walks out of his bedroom, still in his pajamas. Terri remarks how late in the day it is and Jack tells him about the events of the previous night. She goes to put the groceries away in the kitchen. Jack gets a call from the critic who tells him how great the food was and that he would be happy with his review in the paper. Jack begins celebrating with Terri until he realizes about the letter he had Janet type for him. Terri tells him that she mailed the letter, but that it is still in their mailbox downstairs. Jack runs to get it, but the mailman has just grabbed it and is still holding it. Jack tries unsuccessfully to get it from the postman.
Jack goes back upstairs to the apartment to talk to Terri about not being able to retrieve the letter. Larry walks in and hears the conversation. They decide that the best course of action now is to go to the food critic's office and try to retrieve the letter before he opens it. Jack charms Terri into going down there with him and use her beauty to distract him while Jack gets the letter.
