Very enjoyable take over
TheLittleSongbird7 June 2021
It is very easy to say that the premise for "Toons Take Over" is not a novel one. The thing though it is a premise that is still a great one and has been done incredibly well many times. So no matter how many times it's been done, it's pretty timeless. It's a premise that is not a new one for 'Tiny Toon Adventures', that though doesn't matter as it was done brilliantly the other times it was done and it is something that animation in general does so well.

"Toons Take Over" may not be one of the best episodes of 'Tiny Toon Adventures' (despite how some of my reviews for other episodes sound this is coming from somebody who likes the show enormously), or one of the best individual story episodes of the show. It is still very good with plenty to enjoy, and its best components are absolutely great even. Not everything works, but the great premise is handled very well indeed and it certainly left me entertained and nostalgic (expected from this kind of premise).

A perfect episode "Toons Take Over" isn't. Cooper De Ville even for the type of character he is meant to be was excessively over the top to the point of being irritating with no redeeming traits.

Did think too that it could have had more energy and been more inventive. Everything is executed very well inded, it just overall could have done with more spark which is where my rating falls down.

However, so much is great about "Toons Take Over". The animation is bright and colourful and has some lively character animation. The wild expressions are great too. The music is dynamic and characterful as always and the theme song has always brought a smile to my face. Something that was the case when a child and still is now. Much of the humour is sharp and has a nice wacky wit, helped by that the premise is one that suits that style of humour and the show's tone like a glove.

Loved the references, which were as a young adult easier to spot than as a child (the references still worked as a child as they were still timed beautifully and very funny) and they were done in a way that was witty and affectionate. And thankfully not random or shoehorned in. The story is not the most original one on the block and on the slight side, but the irresistibly vibrant energy and great character chemistry lifted it significantly. Buster, Babs and Plucky are typically well characterised and the voice acting is terrific from all.

In conclusion, very good. 8/10.

Epic Movie or Bust

Warning: Spoilers
Warning do not read unless seen episode.

This is another of my favorite episodes of the show. I really like this idea of Buster, Babs, and Plucky all want to take the reins and make a movie on their own; in a way it's a bit meta and forth wall breaking as it's about cartoon characters wanting to make a cartoon movie, yeah wrap your head around that one.

What I like about the episode is how it parodies and even satirizing on how hard it really is to make a single movie. But also, on conflicting interests and how impossible it is to appeal to the masses.

It's funny seeing how each of the characters are going about it like Plucky as usual going for the fast solutions by Xeroxing animated pages just to speed up the animation process, though anyone in animation knows that wouldn't work, but it's a show you just roll with it.

Another is seeing Buster literally being a slave driver as he is in a roman solder outfit and he is drumming the drums while the animators painstakingly animate, this is funny because it's true as animating tons of pages can be grueling work with almost no end. It's just hilarious when Buster then just looses his crap when one of the animators makes a slight demand, just like the "Incredible Hulk" you don't want to make buster angry.

Even like one moment which isn't a funny moment but a good moment of reality, where Babs looks at the progress of one animator's work, but the animator doesn't comply with her wishes all to get a cheap laugh in. But the joke's on him as this of course this causes Babs to also lose her crap.

And Babs has a right to act this way, as she is an animated director, and the project is hers and two of her friends. Like with any production anyone involved that works for you must under contract comply with your orders otherwise well you're off the project. It's also understandable like with myself when I make a movie, write, or any other creative project, no outside interference is allowed, it's my way or the highway that's my policy.

Alright the movie, it's a movie alright but I'll just say it's not for the academies. It's also strangely prolific as this is a film that takes place on a Titanic like cruise liner as James Cameron's "Titanic" came out just about six years later. The film let's just say makes that disaster movie look like a quiet sailboat ride on the beach as the film Babs, Buster, and Plucky made is a disaster in more ways than one and I just love every minute of it.

We can see this film was just this messy mish mash of different ideas and genres which were all blended to make a smoothie, that maybe wasn't the best mixture but still tasted interesting.

You have Babs character doing the Vivian Leigh impersonation, Buster whom is the typical buffed up action hero and Plucky whom is this Shakespearean like character. I won't say anything more than that as this is one of those films you just must see to believe and laugh your head off too. It's no masterpiece but it's a piece of entertainment.

Rating: 4 stars.
