The P-51 Mustangs are marked with Overlord invasion markings. These were applied only on the evening of early June 1944 to permit anti-aircraft crews easier identification during the operation. They remained on aircraft until over-painted.
P-51 Mustang in stock footage taking off as fighter escort has a tail number of 463985. This does not indicate 1946 manufacture as the vast majority of USAAF World War II tail numbers began with the LAST digit of the year of procurement; the aircraft shown was, in fact procured in 1944 and the footage was filmed on the formerly Japanese-owned island of Iwo Jima sometime after its capture in March 1945 and before the loss of the plane in July 1945. Production of all P-51s was curtailed shortly after the end of the war and none were produced in 1946.
The P51 flown by Captain DeJohn has the registration number N5441V on the fuselage. Military aircraft are identified by a serial number. The N number is a civilian registration number, which indicates that this particular plane is a post-war civilian restoration.
