America's most decorated war hero of WWII, Audie Murphy, was actually underage when he enlisted. In fact, quite a few soldiers and sailors faked their ages to join. And, on the other side, Germans sent boys of 10-13 into action very late in the war...as the country was crumbling. So, "Then Came the Mighty Hunter" is a decent idea for an episode, as it is about an underage and very eager waist gunner.
When the story begins, Corporal Corbett (Beau Bridges) arrives at the base fresh out of gunnery school. But he's an odd one, as he's eager to get in and fight...too eager. However, when he does finally see action, this guy freezes. What gives? Well, it turns out he's not even 16 yet...and emotionally he's not even close to being ready for action. What's next?
This is a very good episode with one exception. The stock footage is much sloppier than usual. For example, at about 42 minutes into the show, a German FW-190 briefly turns into an American P-47...and then it becomes a German Bf-109!!! Talk about sloppy! Then, two minutes later, a FW-190 turns into a Bf-109 in mid-flight!! Whoever was in charge of using the footage was either drunk, stupid or simply didn't care...and even non-history lovers will probably notice some of this. It's a shame, as otherwise it's a very good episode.
