- Alan Talbot is having a bad day! He leaves his New York City hotel early in the morning, heading for the subway. While waiting in the underground stop, an evangelical old woman proselytizes him annoyingly to the point that he pushes her in front of the oncoming train.
He flees to the apartment of Jessica Connelly, his fiancee that he met four days ago. A special day is planned in which he will show her around his hometown of Couerville. But when they get there, nothing is right. The hotel does not have a coffee shop. Someone else is living in his house. His neighbor, with whom he had lunch last week, has been dead for three years. The cemetery markers for his parents have the wrong last name.
That night, he has Jessica suddenly stop the car. He flees into the woods. When she follows, he tells her to leave, worrying that he will kill her with the rock in his hand. Later, as he walks along the road in the dark, a car strikes him with a glancing blow, throwing him to the side. The driver asks if he is okay. He pulls at a gash on his wrist to reveal a network of wires, blinking diodes and springs. The realization that he is an android hits.
He puts together clues from the day and goes in search of the son of the cemetery marker he thought was for his parents, Walter Ryder Jr. The son is an loner who has spent his life working on trying to create a perfect artificial man. There are several earlier versions in the work area - all in the image of their creator, just like him! A fight ensues. Walter prevails and goes in search of Jessica, asking for her to forget yesterday and start over.
