As she's about to inject Audrey with heroin, Blackie says "she's ready for her closeup," a paraphrase of the last line of Sunset Boulevard, one of David Lynch's favorite movies and the source of the name Gordon Cole.
Shortly before this episode had aired, Pocket Books published The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer, which was penned by Jennifer Lynch, David's daughter. The cover matches the prop used in the series, and in later episodes some actual passages from the book are read or referenced. However, most of the diary entries read on the show were made up by the writing staff.
When Twin Peaks was rerun on the Bravo cable network in 1993, David Lynch wrote new introductions for each episode that were performed by Catherine Coulson as The Log Lady. The one for this episode is: "Letters are symbols. They are building blocks of words, which form our language. Languages help us communicate. Even with complicated languages used by intelligent people, misunderstanding is a common occurrence. We write things down sometimes - letters, words - hoping they will serve us and those with whom we wish to communicate. Letters and words, calling out for understanding."
First episode not to feature or credit both Eric DaRe or Harry Goaz as part of the supporting cast. This meant also Michael Horse got top billing on the post-opening credits cast for the first time.
The episode takes place on March 6th, 1989.
