Elizabeth rebels from societal pressures.

I would have given this a 10 except that , with hindsight, the same actor was used for the character of Billy and later Bunny. I assume that they are not the same people. Other than that, this is a wonderful episode which focuses on the upstairs society. Elizabeth is a rebel, who does not care to talk about the weather. The relationship between Rose and Elizabeth is shown to be close and trusting. Rose shows her spunk, and her loyalty to the family here. I was bewildered at Lady Marjorie's lack of concern over her daughter wandering the streets at night. "She can take care of herself." But what of the others in the streets? They could take care of her too.

'I'll come out in my own way - just don't tell me what to do'!

Warning: Spoilers
This episode introduces the daughter of the house, Elizabeth Bellamy. Fresh home from school in Germany at just seventeen; 'Liza' is full of new ideas that promise to 'challenge' tradition. Her parents have great plans for her 'coming out', but Elizabeth it seems has other ideas...

This is just one episode where the daughter causes as much trouble 'above ' stairs as Sarah does for 'below'! This episode was quite significant, in that it shows distinctly (and oddly; without the Writers ever really knowing that Nicola Pagett would eventually leave the series) of the direction that the character Elizabeth would later take. Not being happy in England with its 'stiff collar' attitude to life and class system; Elizabeth takes the easy way out and emigrates to America years later.

Probably one of the greatest scenes between two characters takes place in this story in the Servants Hall, when Elizabeth, having shocked her parents by running away from her 'coming out' with all her philosophy, is challenged by Rose, the head-house parlour maid, and an understanding (of sorts) is reached between the two. It also displays the two's close and long-lasting relationship that would blossom throughout the years.

Great stuff!

The Path of Duty

With son James being introduced in the previous episode.

This one has the youngest daughter, Elizabeth who has returned from finishing school in Germany.

Elizabeth is to be introduced within high society as a debutante. Brother James already has a suitor lined up, a fellow soldier.

However Elizabeth is a changed woman after reading german philosophy and has also gained a social conscience.

After the ball, it is Rose who has a heart to heart with Elizabeth knowing her parents are angry for running away.

You can sense the societal pressures on Elizabeth and it is a surprise that her mother did not notice.

The frank exchange between Rose and Elizabeth was refreshing. You do wonder if Elizabeth is just going through the motions of just rebelling or she really is interested in the poor.
