- Quotes
Col. Bud Manstrong: [Touring the Gargantua-1 space station] When it gets cold like this, I always remember back when I was a paperboy on this station. I musta been about your age - and on a night just like this, one of the crew just suddenly... cracked.
Hank Venture, Dean Venture: Cool!
Col. Bud Manstrong: He gathered everyone in the hangar for what he called "movie night." And under the flickering light of Burt Reynolds' "Sharky's Machine," he OPENED the bay doors! Almost the whole crew was there! "Sharky's Machine!" Yup. They say his phantom spirit still roams these corridors.
Hank Venture, Dean Venture: Phantom Spaceman!

Setting the episode on an isolated space station is a great way to get to know our main characters without any outside distractions.
Dr Venture's constant feeling of not living up to his renowned scientist father is explored. Ultimately he wants to be vindicated in his resentment of the man but it's always shown that, in fact, he is inferior and to blame. This compounds his Sense of worthlessness and drives him to medication. He just wants daddy to be proud.
On the other hand we have Hank & Dean. Two wide eyed boys who look up to their father no matter how callously he treats them. Pretty much the inverse of the parental relationship Rusty had with his father. Tales Of the Phantom Spaceman reinforce how gullible and naive the boys are. They see themselves as intrepid adventurers but they're completely out of touch with reality.
Brock is shown as the muscly bodyguard who has basically super human levels of endurance; surviving a trip out into space. The way he handles the other guy also shows Brock is not somebody to be reasoned with. He's a force of nature who takes what he wants without explanation or apology.
Helper is the poor robot who takes a beating and is always being abused.
The Subplot With the two Gargantua 1 crew members and their courtship is great too. The guy comes off effectively as a total mother's boy creep. Very unsettling.
All in all, just a great solid episode and a perfect way to introduce us to the characters and their distinct traits.
