  Barnaby West : I never knew running a wagon train was so much fun.

  Bill Hawks : Fun?

  Barnaby West : Well, yeah, you get to do a lot of different things, riding and hunting and trailblazing, sort of like my Dad does.

• Roberts : Well, ain't that just dandy, picking on a boy younger and littler than you.

  Barnaby West : He's as big as me, bigger.

  Roberts : I'm talking about this one. Boy has to be taught that he can't go around bullying them that are littler than him.

  Bill Hawks : Hold it, Mr Roberts, you have no right to use that on him.

  Roberts : He ain't got no Pa to teach him. Somebody's gotta. Give me that switch.

  Bill Hawks : Where would you like it

  [swish] 

  Bill Hawks : ----Well, I can see where your boys got to be such bullies

  [whack] 

  Bill Hawks : ----You know I think this switch has found the backside that needs it the most

  [whip] 

  Bill Hawks : ----You ought to take this and use it on your kids, maybe you can get the truth out of them

  [thud] 

  Bill Hawks : ----Whether you do or don't, you leave this one alone.

• Bill Hawks : Attaboy, Barnaby. Teach them a lesson. Show 'em what happens when two gang up against one.

  Christopher Hale : What's this all about?

  Bill Hawks : A fight.

  Christopher Hale : Why aren't you stopping this?

  Bill Hawks : What for? Barney can take care of both of them.

• Barnaby West : Ever skin a rabbit?

  Bill Hawks : Yeah, a few of them.

  Barnaby West : You share in the workings, you share the food.

  Bill Hawks : Sounds fair.

• Barnaby West : He's just about the most famous pioneer that ever lived, that's all. He made the biggest gold strike there ever was. He's my father. My name's Barnaby West Junior and his name is Barnaby West Senior.

  Bill Hawks : Well, that figures. Why don't you call your father and I can talk to him, if you put that rifle up long enough.

• Bill Hawks : That's why he didn't buy you a ticket on the stagecoach to Sacramento?

  Barnaby West : Sure is. He said, you can't learn nothing by warming your pants on a soft cushion seat. But think of all there is to learn on the way from Virginia to California. You just travel by yourself on foot.

  Bill Hawks : Virginia?

  Barnaby West : Yeah, that's where I come from.

  Bill Hawks : You mean your Pa let you walk all the way from Virginia all by yourself? A boy like you?

  Barnaby West : Yep. He figured that by the time I got here I'd be closer to being a man than when I left.

  Bill Hawks : I've never heard of such a ridiculous thing.

  Barnaby West : [Points his rifle at Bill]  Are you calling me a liar?

  Bill Hawks : Well, no. It's just I've never heard of a father asking his boy to do a thing like this, that's all.

  Barnaby West : If I got this far by myself, that proves he knew what he was doing.

  Bill Hawks : All right, I give up. I know when I'm outnumbered.
