- Jenny: [San Fransisco 1860 - El Dorado Saloon Bar - she sings] That you love me still, the same that you loved , you loved me still the same.
- Party Guest, Party Guest, Party Guest, Party Guest: To Jenny Tanen, the most beautiful voice, the most beautiful face in San Fransisco. Miss Tannen.
- Jenny: Thank you, gentlemen. Now allow me to toast the wonderful audience in the world, the men of San Fransisco
- [as she descends the stairs, she trips, her face landing in her shattered Champagne glass]
- Jenny: [Phoebe] I can't see you very well, Major.
- Major Seth Adams: That's all right, honey. I'm not much to look at anyway, so don't go straining your eyes looking at me.
- Flint McCullough: It must take a lot of courage for a girl to work her way across the country. Those people she's travelling with, they really make her work for her passage.
- Major Seth Adams: Takes more than courage. She's got a sort of blind faith that she's gonna find her mother in San Fransisco, settle all her problems.
- Bill Hawks: She might find her. It's not impossible, y'know.
- Flint McCullough: ...If this Tannen woman is so successful, it's funny we didn't run into her when we were in San Fransisco last year.
- Major Seth Adams: It is. As I recall, you covered that town pretty well, didn't you?
- Vickers: I've told you, Miss Tannen never receives anyone. This a rule of ten years' standing. And I see no occasion to break it now.
- Major Seth Adams: [He grabs at Vickers] Listen to me, you. I've come a long ways to tell her about her daughter and you're not gonna STOP me.
- Vickers: You cannot do this, sir.
- Major Seth Adams: Looks like I've already done it. Now where is she?
- Jenny: Well, you've shouted your way into my home and now you're finally looking at Jenny Tannen. Tell me, is it worth it?
- Major Seth Adams: You're a very beautiful woman, Miss Tannen.
- Jenny: It's taken you all these years to get up the nerve to come and tell me that?
- Major Seth Adams: No, no. Just about a week, I'd say.
- Jenny: Nobody heard of Jenny Tannen just 'last week.'
- Major Seth Adams: Well, I did. I've heard a great deal about Jenny tannen the past many weeks. Miss Tannen, I didn't come to see you just for myself. I came here to speak to you about your daughter.
- Jenny: You know my daughter?
- Major Seth Adams: Yes, I do. I just brought a wagon train West and your daughter, Phoebe, worked her way across the country with a family on the train. She's here in San Fransisco right now.
- Jenny: Is she?
- Jenny: I didn't have her blind faith. I never thought we'd find you but she did. She knew all along she'd find her mother.
- Jenny: Not many people know I have a daughter.
- Major Seth Adams: You sure do. Certainly Miss Phoebe does. But before I bring her to you, there's something...
- Jenny: Before you what, Major?
- Major Seth Adams: I said, before I bring her to you, there's something you should know.
- Jenny: I have no intention of seeing her.
- Charlie Wooster: [to the mannequin in the store] You say this comes all the way from Paris, France, ma'am?
- [He toffs his hat]
- Charlie Wooster: Oh, excuse me. Well, I thought she was that sales lady. Feel it, Major, feel it
- [the bustle]
- Major Seth Adams: I don't want to feel it.
- Charlie Wooster: Smooth, smooth as a belly on a newborn calf.
- Charlie Wooster: Well, it's about tonight. Being your first time in San Fransisco, the Major figured that called for a little celebration. Didn't ya?
- Major Seth Adams: Yes, I did. I don't know. It's just...
- Charlie Wooster: Yessir. We'll have a time. Dining. Dancing. Champagne. All that stuff. That's the way the Major does things when he does 'em. Not often though.
- Jenny: [Phoebe] It sounds wonderful.
- Charlie Wooster: That's only the beginning. Just the half of it. He's got a couple more surpises for you too. Haven't you?
- Charlie Wooster: You shouldn't give up hope, Miss Phoebe. Tomorrow's another day, y'know. Well, folks say that all the time.
- Major Seth Adams: Miss Tannen, I came because I thought that Phoebe needed you. Now I'm afraid, you need her... You don't deserve to have a daughter like Phoebe. And I'm gonna to do everything in my power to see that you never lay eyes on her.
- Jenny: It's incredible. It might just as well be me singing.
- Major Seth Adams: Well, like mother, like daughter.
- Jenny: I had no idea. I hope she never wants a career.
- Major Seth Adams: Don't you worry about that, Miss Tanner. She's got a great voice but the kid cam only sing when she's happy.
- Jenny: [Phoebe] You know what. I never really noticed before, you're a perfectly beautiful man.
- Major Seth Adams: I make a much better looking shadow.
- Charlie Wooster: Well, that's one load off my mind.
- Major Seth Adams: One?
- Charlie Wooster: Sure. If Phoebe's going to be all dressed up, we'll have to buy some new duds for ourselves, won't we?
- Major Seth Adams: Oh, I would have to tell you to think of something.
- Charlie Wooster: Well, I did, didn't I?
- Major Seth Adams: Yes, you did. You did.
- John Barclay: What a tonic it'll be for Jenny to see you. I thought everyone in San Fransisco knew where Jenny lives.
- Charlie Wooster: Miss Phoebe make it all right, Major?
- Major Seth Adams: Aw, she made it just fine, Charlie.
- Charlie Wooster: Good, good.
- Major Seth Adams: What are you doing here?
- Bill Hawks: Came with him.
- Major Seth Adams: What?
- Flint McCullough: [He's dressed to the nines in white] He's talking about me, Major.
- Major Seth Adams: [Flint does a slow 360 turn, showing off his duds] Well, glory be. Look at that. What am I supposed to do? Crow? And act like I'm happy?
- Flint McCullough: Well, it'd be a nice change.
- Bill Hawks: Sure'd be friendly of you, you'd miss us.
- Major Seth Adams: Now, Major
- Major Seth Adams: Just give me the chance.
- Flint McCullough: Major, wait a minute. We've had a long tow with the wagons, why don't we take it easy going back? Why don't we, say, take a ship around the Horn?
- Major Seth Adams: You know, Flint old boy, that's a great idea. You're dressed beautifully for the Tropics. You'd enjoy it. I think you should take it.
- Flint McCullough: And how would you go back?
- Major Seth Adams: We're gonna walk.
- Flint McCullough: And I'm gonna buy a ticket.
- Major Seth Adams: Miss Tannen, I thought I had met almost all types of women. But you, you're...
- Jenny: Honest? Major? Is that the word you're looking for?
- Major Seth Adams: No, that is NOT the word.
- Jenny: James considered gaiety, a little brightness in life, to be evil. It was a sin to smile, an even greater sin to laugh. When I could feel no more shame for wanting a little joy out of life, I left him and the child I had not wanted to bear him.
- Jenny: [Phoebe singing] Do not dilly. Do not dally. Day breaks in the East. To cloudless skies, the sun will rise and so must man and beast. For years and years the sun will shown that he knows what is best. Each morning he has left the East to settle in the West.
- Charlie Wooster: Good old Golden West.
- Jenny: [Phoebe singing] Be it hilly. Be it valley, we will meet the test. With every mile, a bigger smile to greet the Golden West.
- Charlie Wooster: [Talk/sings] I ain't the kind that's paid much mind by ladies I'm a-fear. May just be they all can't see the beauty of my beard.
- Jenny: [Phoebe singing] ... Do not shilly. Do not shally. Let's get set to go. Just pack your gear for soon we'll hear the Major's "Wagons Ho." For years and years the sun has shown that he knows best. Each morning he has left the East to settle in the West. The good old Golden West.
- Jenny: [Phoebe sings and stops all the dancers on the dancefloor] Tomorrow is just a day away. Tomorrow's approaching fast. I'll be up to welcome the dawn and say tomorrow is with us at last. I know it will be a lovely day. I know that the sun will shine, songbirds will sing, church bells will ring. What makes the day so fine. Tomorrow is yours and mine.
- Charlie Wooster: Well, Major, that would be a terrible thing for a lady, wouldn't it.
- Major Seth Adams: It's not easy. And I'm afraid that scar goes more than skin deep. I'm afraid it's twisted her thinking.
