Charles Drake: Link Cheney

Quotes

  • Dorthea Gillford : Good morning, Mr Cheney.

Link Cheney : I have died and gone to heaven.

Dorthea Gillford : I'm Dorthea Gillford.

Link Cheney : Dorthea. What a lovely name for an angel.

  • Link Cheney : From what I know of men, Mr Hale, it'll take more than laws on the books to keep him from waging.

    Christopher Hale : Very likely.

Link Cheney : Seems to me you're putting the blame in the wrong place. If there's hate and violence in a man, it will come out. Even if you burn up every deck of cards in the world.

  • Link Cheney : I have seen what caution does to a man. If you always hedge, you never take on a big risk. You don't lose very much, you don't win very much either. Wouldn't be any pleasure for me in playing it that way... or living that way.

  • Link Cheney : What's your pleasure?

Charlie Wooster : Well, my pleasure is Spit in the Ocean.

Link Cheney : Oh, ah, Spit in the Ocean.

    Christopher Hale : Champion.

Charlie Wooster : Or, if that's too risky for your blood, I play Cincinnati, Butcher Boy and Wild Wood. Any of them old games.

Link Cheney : Well, it looks like we're gonna have a pleasant time.

  • Dorthea Gillford : Very fancy.

Link Cheney : Oh, it's just show-off dealing. I don't use anything that flashy in the game. It just lets the others know that I'm friendly with these things, and they're just casual acquaintances.

  • Dorthea Gillford : If I'm to be a part of our life, that'd mean changes.

Link Cheney : I know that a man that's married just can't drift. A girl likes to know she has a place that's hers. I can't see myself in a shop. I can't give up my cards.

Dorthea Gillford : But isn't that what love is, giving up one thing for another?

Link Cheney : I don't know. All I know is that I have feeling for you that's different. I guess I hadn't pushed it that far thinking that there might have to be a choice.

  • Link Cheney : Now, why should he let me win?

Euchre Jones : To set up a second game.

Link Cheney : There's not gonna be a second game.

Euchre Jones : Sure there will be. Baffle's gonna demand it. You walked away with a pocketful of his money. No real gambling man can deny the chance to get some of it back.

Link Cheney : All right, let's have the rest of it.

Euchre Jones : There's gonna be a second game, you, Baffle, Tim, and any other fish that ain't scared of deep water. Only this time the side bets are gonna be bigger than what goes on the board.

Link Cheney : What side bets?

Euchre Jones : I've bet with Baffle everything I've got that Tim cleans you out of. He's given me good odds, 'cos after the other night, he thinks Tim's no match for you.

  • Link Cheney : I've got a reputation. I've built it slow and I've built it careful. And I'm proud of it. I don't envy any man. Now it's come to me, Thea, that since I met you, I might have to make another choice. I'll make it but in my own time. And in my own way.

Dorthea Gillford : If you really cared about me, you'd think about what I want.

Link Cheney : I know what you want. And what Euchre wants. And what Mrs Briggs wants. And just about what everybody in the wagon train wants. NOW, I'm going to decide WHAT I WANT!
