- Cooper Smith: Which one is yours?
- Duke Shannon: Neither.
- Cooper Smith: You're not trying to convince me you're just a music lover?
- Cooper Smith: Paula tells me you entertained the troops during the war.
- Sandra Cummings: You know what's wrong with her.
- Cooper Smith: I'm surprised I never ran into you. Maybe we were on different sides then too.
- Sandra Cummings: I aked you to leave her alone. Why won't you?
- Cooper Smith: Maybe I don't like taking orders from you.
- Sandra Cummings: It's my daughter you're leading on.
- Cooper Smith: Then talk to her.
- Sandra Cummings: I intend to. I know your kind, Mr Smith.
- Cooper Smith: What kind is that?
- Sandra Cummings: Not the marrying kind. Paula is young and she doesn't know how much she can be hurt.
- Cooper Smith: But you do. Something you learnt in the war? You must have known a lot of men there.
- Duke Shannon: She sure is about the sweetest little gal I ever did see. It's too bad I didn't meet her four or five years from now whenever I decide to cut one from the herd for myself. For keeps, that is. She's just the kind I'd be looking for. Of course, by then I'd imagine she'd probably be taken.
- Charlie Wooster: I never knew how hard it was to talk to someone without asking a question.
- Christopher Hale: I know it's a revolutionary thought, Charlie. Have you thought about not talking?
- Paula Cummings: Oh, Coop, I'm so sorry for you.
- Cooper Smith: For me? After what I've done? Hit me, kick me, Paula. But don't feel sorry for me.
- Paula Cummings: But you're the loser. You've lost a lot more than anyone.
- 3rd Sentry: [Out in the yard of the prison] What are you doing here?
- Sandra Cummings: Haven't you heard? I live here.
- Cooper Smith: [Sandra is dancing and singing on stage:Walzing has its charms] Helleva highclass place for a wagon train scout.
- Duke Shannon: Shh. Shh... Oh hi, Coop. Talk to you in a minute... Wagon train get here all right?
- Cooper Smith: Nope.
- Duke Shannon: That's good.
- Cooper Smith: It's not coming this way.
- Duke Shannon: Fine, fine.
- Cooper Smith: Fact is, it's heading back east.
- Duke Shannon: Swell.
- Cooper Smith: Charlie got tired of taking orders. Charlie took over as wagonmaster.
- Duke Shannon: Good, good.
- Cooper Smith: And Bill and Chris quit.
- Duke Shannon: Fine, fine.
- Cooper Smith: First thing Charlie did was fire you and me.
- Duke Shannon: That's good.
- [the walz and show ends]
- Duke Shannon: What do you think of it, Coop?
- Cooper Smith: I think I'd like to meet her.
- Duke Shannon: Oh, you're going to. I've been waiting here for three days, got acquainted with the whole troupe. They've been talking to me about going to Greenville with the train. That's where they make their next appearance.
- Cooper Smith: Good, good.
- Duke Shannon: By the way, did you say the train was here?
- Cooper Smith: Huh.
- Duke Shannon: The wagon train is here, isn't it?
- Cooper Smith: Yeah, yeah.
