Detective Superintendent Boyd and his team investigate the murder of Katherine Reed, a senior Home Office official who was found asphyxiated in her bed. Ricky Taft, a burglar arrested in her apartment, has been found not guilty of the murder and Boyd's team start a new investigation from scratch. They are surprised to learn that 11 months after her death, her remains are still available foe examination as her husband refused to accept them until her killer was convicted. As they look into Reed's private life, the find an indifferent husband with a dodgy alibi, a former colleague who may have own reasons to dislike the woman and the fact that she may have had a lover. They also find that the Home Office is less than cooperative, wrapping several events under a shroud of secrecy.
