Grandma's stroke occurred during filming of this episode. Judy Norton(Mary Ellen) has done a series of "Behind the Scenes" videos & in the one about this episode, she recalls that Grandma hadn't shown up for work & Will Geer was insistent that something was wrong as that wasn't like Ellen. So he & producers went to her house & found her. Their actions undoubtedly saved her life.
This is the last episode Grandma is in before Ellen Corby's stroke and long time away from the show.
Ellen Corby appears at the beginning but is then absent for the remainder of this episode due to a debilitating stroke she suffered during production. There appears to be an attempt to cover her absence by having Grandpa address her off camera a couple of times.
Olivia's hair grew half way down her back in one episode after she had just gotten it cut short in the previous episode..
John Walton wants to read an article about baseball legend and last National League 30 game-winner Dizzy Dean that Ben has cut out of the paper. Assuming the episode is set in the year 1937, Dizzy broke his big toe in the All-Star game when Earl Averill hit a line drive back at the mound, hitting Dean on the foot. Dean came back too soon from the injury and changed his pitching motion not to land on his sore foot. As a result, he hurt his arm and lost his fastball, he was pretty much done as a pitcher. At the time he was injured Dean sported a 12 and 7 record. He finished the season 13 and 10. The next year he was traded Chicago Cubs and helped them into the World Series against the Yankees with an 8-1 record. He lost the 2nd game of the World Series. That season is considered his "Last Stand". He went into broadcasting where he was both popular and colorful because of his fractured English.
