The sign outside the schoolhouse indicated that John Boy Walton would be graduating with his high school class of 1934.
In his graduation speech, John-Boy states that, "...no man can be paid less than the new minimum wage." He is referring to the National Industrial Recovery Act, passed in 1933 to authorize President Roosevelt to regulate industry for fair wages and prices that would stimulate economic recovery.
The quote that Miss Hunter writes in John-Boy's autograph book is from the poem "The Ladder of St. Augustine" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: "The heights by great men reached and kept / Were not attained by sudden flight, / But they, while their companions slept, / Were toiling upward in the night."
The episode of "Ma Perkins" being broadcast when John-Boy turns on the radio at Ike's store is the same episode Ike and Grandpa are seen listening to in The Typewriter (1972).
Kami Cotler's (Elizabeth Walton) younger brother Jeff (credited only as "Young Boy) made his first appearance on THE WALTONS in this episode. By Series end, he made a total of four appearances, with the most memorable role of Philip "Pip" Wayburn in S06E11, "The Christmas Carol". Pip and older sister Tess were British presumed orphans taken in by the Waltons. The other episodes: S04E04 "The Prophecy" S05E25 "The Go-Getter". Semper Fi
